Very nice. It's too late at night to go through completely, but I will check out more later and give feedback and suggestions if i find any weaknesses in the site. Seems to be one bad link on http://davidadriansmith.com/?page_id=17 If you click the panel "click here to view", it doesn't lo...

Re: Has anyone tried this?

great post...and great reply from Pat. I was getting excited at the idea of these multi-step processes...my imagination firing on the possibilities it could open. Just think how sweet it would be to create and control different glue chip patterns and create a new type of pearlescent finish. (I recen...

Funny, I didn't even notice that before. It must be just for show and missing the axle, isn't it?

Bruce Jackson's photo archive - 7 - Emporium, Central Tilba

This general store in Central Tilba, New South Wales, now trading as Bate's Emporium, was opened by "Crapp and Boxell" on the 1st January 1895. A sign in the shop claims it was the largest store on the south coast in it's era. There were seven wagon teams delivering goods between Bega and ...

Re: Shellack turning white when dry

It's funny isn't it...whatever product we demonize and ban, it affects the legitimate uses. try asking a furniture restorer where they get it...or art/paint supply, or picture framer. Or maybe buy it as a cleaning product... or chemical company...it's got so many industrial uses, there will certainl...

Re: Shellack turning white when dry

you definitely don't want diluted mixtures like that. After all...70% means it probably going to have 30% water...exactly what you don't want. You just want just straight alcohol. I don't know what percentage should be regarded as a minimum, but I assume it should be almost pure. The stuff I use is ...

Re: Shellack turning white when dry

The problem is probably moisture. If the air is cold and humid, it causes this "bloom". How's the weather there? Maybe the alcohol is contaminated...try a different one. Usually, as long as the temperature is not too cold...say at least above 10 degrees C, it should be OK. One more thing.....

Hi Ingrid,

I think something must have changed over time. This post was 6 years old, but since you bumped it, I re-read it an see that my original images have disappeared too. I'll see if I can edit my original entry.

Here's one out of left field. It's a restored hearse. Although the gilded decoration on the glass is relatively recent, I was told it done according to the original design. This vehicle is on display at Sovereign Hill in Ballarat. The same place as my first post featuring a Rhubarb jar. It's not pos...

Re: Gold leaf sign

As this has been revived with a few unanswered questions, I'll add my opinion for the benefit of kirE, sraL and agnI. First, the mask. I use a sign mask vinyl. It is a fairly hard vinyl (that is not too flexible) and has a low tack. I have tried regular (cast) vinyl, but it is too difficult to peel ...

Re: Bruce Jackson's photo archive - 5 - Bushells Coffee

Dave, All these shops have lots of character. Many of the building were made during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It's a very typical type of shop in Victoria because so much development happened at that time. It's a bit hard to find dates for these signs. I think a lot of these signs were...

Bruce Jackson's photo archive - 5 - Bushells Tea and Coffee

Bushells kept signwriters in full time work painting their signs all over the country on walls, verandahs and seemingly any surface they could use. They competed for space with other coffee and tea brands, such as Robur and Lan-Choo and the faded signs that attest to the brand battle can still be fo...

what an incredible photo. Amazingly crisp. As for the signage in it...The thing that strikes me most is all the gold signs on those small windows up several stories. You just never see that here. No one puts a window sign about the second floor. Yet looking at the 12 story building one block behind ...

I'm curious what was unsatisfactory about it? Pat, I think you are right. The French ones definitely look like decals to me. They are both identical, the cross-hatching etc. And also the Bismuth jar that started this post is too. Dave said so, plus I found more proof in it's sibling, shown below (same crest design, different word). But the one ...

Re: Chocolate Shop in Deventer Netherlands

thanks for the extra pics.

I still think Ringers looks like it's in lemon gold and bonbons and chocolade in regular gold.

and I think that reflected texture is from the building across the street. It looks like cloth, so maybe it's an awning or blind.

Wow, another great example. This one seems to be more cleanly executed. Did you study it closely Dave? I'm assuming it's hand-painted, but being so neat, it makes me wonder if it is hand-done or possibly done using a decal or some other printing technique to do the black linework. The Rhubarb jar I ...

thanks. that makes sense. There is just so much happening in the reflection, especially in "ringers", it didn't look to me like the letters are matt finish. Reflections can work for or against a sign, that's for sure. I did a small job a few weeks ago. Black outline/Bright outer/matt centr...

Lovely piece. Thanks for posting it. The word "Ringers" appears to be a different colour to the other words. Also, I'm trying to work out how they have achieved the shade effect. Both the main letter and the shade seem to be bright (mirror) finish. Maybe it's just a trick of the camera. Is...

Re: pounding gold..............

It's pretty amazing how far it will spread. The gold I'm getting custom-made is 17grams per 1000 leaves. European standard is 15-16 grams per 1000. Some of the cheaper stuff is only 12-13 grams. It seems to me, the value of the gold is a bit over half the cost of a book if bought at wholesale. If bu...
