Hi Steven,
I would prefer to re-do the entire job from your discription of the work. It seems the varnish and outline has broken down, if the varnished centers of the letters are also damages I think patching will be noticed, so do the job right and start again.

Hi, I notice this all the time here in the U.K. - I cannot believe how standards drop and quality goes out of the window ! It's not always due to money, I think some people look at signs and just don't appreciate the good from the bad, and boy there is plenty of bad, perhaps bad might become the nor...

Hi Bigpapa, Welcome on board, the best way is to try and attend a letterhead meeting, learn from the guys with experience who are willing to share their knowledge, and practice, practice, practice, it looks easy when you see a traditional signwriter pushing the paint but it takes a lifetime to learn,...

Hi all,
I use a product here in the UK called Brasso, you guessed it....it cleans brass ! ! I call it the signwriters best friend !
It comes in a liquid and has a slight abrasive, works a treat, even used it like rubbing compound to remove old painted lettering.

Hi gang, If the work has been backed up with an enamel paint then I agree with John and don't bother with the varnish as it might breakdown anyway, if you are having difficulty finding a clear varnish and still want to apply that protective coat then I think a clear goldsize will work well inplace o...

Hi, I have used gold powders in the past by filling an empty plastic washing up liquid bottle with the powderand, replacing the top and them blowing the powder onto the work, works well but I think all powders will tarnish even if sealed with varnish, there is no substitute for the real thing.... go...

Hi Mike, I have not been registered with your web site very long and always find it to be very informative and helpful, the sharing of signwriting knowledge around the world can only be a good thing for the traditional signwriters who visit here, and the trade, I never get the chance to ' talk paint...

Dave, If you keep water in the can instead of mineral spirit the paint stays on the brush whilst in the can and the water acts like an air barrier and keeps the brush supple. take the brush out and spin it with your hands to remove the excess water and away you go. I have kept brushes for long perio...

I used to have a wooden mahl stick that came in three pieces with brass ferrels to screw it together to make whatever length of stick you required, it was 2 feet long with one piece but with the extentions on was almost 5 feet long, as I remember one of my then apprentices borrowed it and never gave...

Hi, I would use layex every time, signwriters paint dries slower and is more likely to gather in the uneven wall and then run, the latex will dry quicker and is less likely to run, latex can also be second coated quicker and is available in more vibrant colours. There is a gable end that I signwrote...
