Re: Old style copper framing...

Erik, Here are those pages from the Spanjer catalog that Danny Baronian was referring to about the copper clad framing. I have some modern day info on this type of molding and who sells it, but at the moment I can not find it. Will keep looking and let you know what I find. Until then look for Coppe...

Why not just by some pre-made tinning solution...it's not that expensive, and it pretty darn good stuff. If you are having a tinning problem, I am of the observation and belief that prior to the tinning of your glass, you should "polish" your glass as smooth as possible with Cerium Oxide, ...

Re: Epiphanes Varnish

Robert Frese of Chicagold has been using Epifanes for a few years now. Epifanes Clear High Gloss Varnish with UV-Filter. He has used all the other brands on the market for varnishing his gold leaf work, but says Epifanes is by far the best in durability. It comes in gallons (5 liters), quarts (1 lit...

Roskilde Cathedral

Many years ago, one of my mentors showed me a post card of Roskilde Cathedral in Denmark. He had gone there on Holiday. He explained that the paintings as well as the moldings and stone work were all Flat, with no dimension. He said he went to one end of the wall and sited down it, and could see no ...

Not sure it this applies, but I will give it a shot. Back in the day, when I was stationed at Holloman Air Force Base. I used to work down at the Test Track. One day I noticed a white substance on the rails, and I asked what it was. They told me "Talc Powder". I asked, "Why Talc ?&quo...

Re: Paint mask for Gilding Jobs

I use the paint thick not thin, as I don't want it seeping under the mask. And I apply it lightly in two coats. I peel the masking 15 to 30 mins after last coat. Sometimes I peel the masking after an hour, it all depends on how fast it's curing / drying. Which is determined by the air temperature an...

Re: Paint mask for Gilding Jobs

Dave, Are you peeling the mask after your paint dries? If so, do as Bob says, and peel your mask after letting the paint tack up a bit...to test the tack, touch some of the paint that is on the mask to check how its tacking up. The paint edges will then roll a bit, making it easy to gild. As far as ...

The list of Glass Sign Artist might be better served if it was broken up into catagories. Live - Dead - Past - Present - Before 1900 - After 1900, etc. Just some suggestions. And also, Don't forget Charles J. Strong (before 1900) and Robert Frese (after 1900). Heissler Junge by Charles Strong.jpg

Wow, that thing is huge!...and there are two? It did not look that large in your first photo of it. I would up the price to somewhere between $300 and $500 like you originally stated.

Loved the video, but where is the post of the finished piece?

Eric, you could purchase some rubber corks to cap off the openings with once you poured in your solutions. Chemical supply dealers sell those black rubber flask corks in several sizes...and judging by the opening of the glass globe in your picture, they would for sure have one in your size. Check th...
