Screen fabric
Just curious. What type screen fabric are glass gold folks using for backing up gold with Gilder's Black? Have been using 12XX to 20XX (200) successfully, both monofilament and multifilament. Screens using courser fabric (12XX) can be reclaimed better than the fine mesh, otherwise printing doesn't s...

Re: Peace Gold Leaf Workshop
Hello Dave, I noticed that you referred to "90" regarding screen mesh. This seems rather course or am I reading it incorrectly. I had been advised to use 200 mesh to 320 for the fine detail which seems to be working just fine. Although the courser mesh would deposit a heavier backing coat ...

Wheel of Fortune
Recently completed two part gold, glue chipped work inspired by Rick Glawson's Wheel of Fortune from the 80's. This was NOT an attempt to redo RIck's work but an attempt to incorporate gold glasswork outside of the traditional commercial purposes. My work comes from my "furnace room" studi...

Steve Parrish Video
If anyone is interested, a short 5 minute segment of Steve Parrish doing a gold job in an Oklahoma Bank in the 70's or early 80's is available on the Charles Kuralt On the Road series Set #2, episode 17. Although it is short it is probably one of the few videos with Steve. Others probably exist from...

Removing glass scratches
Need opinions and advice. Nearing completion of 13"x72" plate glass glue chipped and gilded project. The front side has several scratches (about one square inch) on the front side that should be removed if possible. I have used cerium oxide in the past and understand the labor involved plu...

Re: Applying mother of pearl to reverse glass
Thanks for the advice. My concern is that one area for the pearl will be about 2 inches by 30 inches behind gilded and shaded lettering. There will be, of course, some rather large areas around the lettering where the pearl will be very visible and I thought that perhaps such large areas would show ...

Applying mother of pearl to reverse glass
What is the appropriate adhesive for applying thin abalone to reverse glass? Two approaches being considered are: 1) adhering the thin abalone to the reverse of the glass or 2) adhering the abalone to the face of the support (wood) directly behind the glass. Final decision has not been made on this ...

Gilder's Black and Ronan
I have had success with using Gilder's Black for backing up gold, screenprinting and brush work. It works great and is, indeed "tough". I have also used the black to tint Ronan lettering enamels and discovered that it works well and dries with the same "toughness". SInce I am usi...

Re: Asphaltum Bummer!!
Printmaking suppliers stock liquid asphaltum. Graphic Chemical (IL) stocks it at around $12.00 at quart or $38.00 a gallon. Dick Blick also carries the small size (pint). I have found their material excellent quality. Bob

Re: Glue chip glass problem
I have worked through the possible contamination. My primary concern with this piece is that after a second chipping, of which 95% was successful, I am still not pleased with a small remaining section (1 inch by 5 inches) that chipped with a different chip. A chip that was quite like small pebbles a...

Re: Glue chip glass problem
The cleaning step with Bon Ami after the subcontractors's blasting was intended to remove any residue that may have been remaining from the contractor's contaminated pressure system and I thought that it would help me determine the original problem with the glue not adhering to the blasted area. Applied glue and followed the usual procedures. Outcome: Chipped well except for one five square inch spot. Tried ano...

Purple bronze powder
I vaguely recall that a purple bronze powder was available in the '60s. Is this true, and if so, is it available for glass work today?
Perhaps I am just dreaming.
Thanks. Bob

Re: gold & glass monument
Beautifully executed. Reminds me of an outdoor job done for a bank in the 60's. Only lasted a year due to freeze and thaw climate. Has this work allowed for moisture build-up and possible accumulation of moisture due to temp changes? This is a great concept but may be limited to areas that don't exp...

Robert Mitchell, in his 1984 book on glue chipped glass signs, speculated that there is a glass that does not require blasting prior to chipping. Just curios, is this a reality? Does anyone know of this possibility? Bob

Re: Glue chip glass problem
Thanks to all the great suggestions. I haven't abandoned the project yet. The only variable appears to be the blasting material. RMN and others, I have successfully gilded glue chipped glass projects but this is a first that the chip did not occur. Hello again,
What are the pros and cons of silicon carbide as the abrasive to prepare the glass for chipping. A local stained glass artist uses this in his etch work and will do the subcontracting. Bob
