Re: Commonwealth Varnish Co- Free varnish
I spoke to Frank a little over a year ago this month, and was told he'd follow up here shortly. That was the last I heard from him. As far as I know Frank purchased the rights to the name and formula for Commonwealth. Somewhere between the lines, Rich Dolphens (spl?) purchased the remaining products...

Glass in the round
I've passed by this shop nearby, but it's always been closed... until my last trip to the town. The outside looks unique in not only looks, but it's location; almost in the center of a residential area. It was originally home to Crockett Soda Works. Crockett, CA, is home to C & H Sugar, where at...

Blatant self promotion.... You had a good teacher. Bill had a good student. Some of that 'talent' must have been inside all along. The only thing I would have done different would have to made the boy scout on the left look like he was awake! :D Nice work. If the NY Times does an article of your wor...

Hi Bill,
glad you found what you were looking for. I think the classic was the stumper, I have and found Barnum, but not classic which has the spurs.
Didn't know Gemini sold fonts.

Well, you don't need me to tell you what I think of your work. You already know.. Does descriptions on splitting the turning exclude me too? If you saw the piece in person, not turning on the lathe as pictured, it would be a dead give away for anyone that's done any lathe work. Kinda like looking at...

Condolences to you and your family Ric.
Like others, I've talked with Harry over the years. With this news, it seems like just yesterday we sat together working on a project at a Memorial Conclave at Rod's.
All the best to the family.

Re: Glass Gilding Freezer Window
Hi Bob, no experience with your situation, but I'd suggest getting a piece of tempered glass with the bug imprint, per city requirements, paint and gild as normal in the comfort of your shop. Have a glazier install the glass either over, or in place of the existing exterior trim. No need to shut the...

Hi Ashley, nice photos. Interesting to see how well those have held up. I'm curious, in photo 64 there's a mother, daughter in pink pants, and a boy sitting on the curb. Is that your family? If it is, it needs no caption, as we've all heard it too many times before: Smile for dad; is he taking pictu...

Never did find the crimper at Rick's. Talked to David T, and he said Rick used a crimper to seal the ends. Whether it was specifically made for that purpose, or as Mike said needle nose pliers, don't know. Years ago I searched online for tube crimpers, but never found a source. Many places carry the...

I've never had this problem in Illustrator either, but if it happens occasionally in whatever program you're using, on a file you've opened that doesn't display in the art board, on the pc do a control a (select all) followed by cut and paste, which will paste whatever's in the file into the current...

Fine Gold Sign Co. before that. Someone else will have to fill that date in.

Re: *NEEDING TO MAKE A BIG ORDER*
Noah, I talked to a chemist at Bon Ami when the bar was no longer available. Mike's correct in that the powder is the same, with one major exception: there are now two types in powder form, one comes in a metalic gold can, which is NOT the same as the original, and a mustard colored can. Here on the...

Noah, if you're looking for hydrochloric acid, it's common name is muriatic acid, and can be found in most hardware stores. Unless it's something Dave specified in his class for a particular use, it will not etch like hydrofluoric acid. If you're looking to emboss glass, do an internet search for la...

Hi Robert, Try eliminating the scratches. Next time you see one, or more, you'll realize the fastest way to get the job done right, is to start over when you first see a problem. Scratches are not easy to eliminate. In ordering glass, I specify architectural quality glass. Upon order, the wholesaler...

William, you must be planning to gild the sate of Colorado! :D That's enough to pass on to your great great grandkids! Unless the gelatin has been tightly sealed, and air free, there's a good chance it will not perform as well over time, and require a test before each job. Opened gelatin has a limit...

Lars, first try wiping your tip as you would a brush on a clean cotton cloth, stroking it as you would in cleaning any brush. If you have loaded it too much, the tip can be cleaned as any other brush, just with more care with the mounting. I had the same problem when starting out and was told to cle...
