I must say, I had a somewhat different reaction to the possible hijacking of the topic to get some incoming links for . purposes, but perhaps i better say nothing because your response is far more mature than mine...hahaha I agree some explanation of...

Re: Gold Leaf Backing Paint Issue.
sounds mysterious. next stage, I would probably try a couple of tests strokes using some other types of paints just to see if the problem lays in the glass or with the paint. For another suggestion, it might be worth giving it a chemical clean using strong solvent such as acetone, then give a Bon am...

that's a really fascinating story Lee, Who'd have thought!...I would never have imagined needing to be concerned about mircroflora or lichen on gilding...but it does make a lot of sense. As for your observation about whistling tack and quick size....yes, normally, I gild on quick size mixed with ena...

Interesting to see the time intervals between gilding..20 years, 26 years, 16 years I wonder what other experiences we can share about exterior gilding. It would be very illuminating to add to our collective knowledge about the longevity of different methods and materials. In my own case, Mostly, it...

Re: lettering enamel over wood grain
I'd put a clear coat on first...lettering it will be smoother and faster. Also, if you write with enamel over the raw timber, it will soak in a little, so it will not look as solid, and the edge probably won't look as crisp. Best clear?....i think you mean...least worst....hahaha...... In fact, any ...

Re: "ageing" letters on glass
Sven, The one I posted above was just normal water size. You'll notice a matt centre in the letters. This was done by painting the matt first onto the glass with clear gold size. After it had got to the end of it's tack window and surface-dried but was still soft, give it a light scuff just to kill ...

Here's one simple way to approach it when doing a gilded letter....just rubbed back prior to backing up...and then back up with clear instead of black.

Re: Gilding a cast aluminum plaque
I would like to know what type of clear coat it is before giving a definitive answer. Only because I would want some confidence that the clear is a good long-term proposition, otherwise, it will end up being the weak layer. Assuming the clear is good for outside use, you could simply do the gilding ...

Beautiful effect. I really like the brushed patina.
Thanks for the step by step info too...i wondered how you protected each side while burnishing. Using acetate sheet, very clever.

Re: Toronto Restroom Sign
Earlier this year I did the windows and some internal lettering for a bar in Prahran (Australia). It was done out in a club atmosphere, with hunting paraphenalia, dark timber panelling and some early 20th century fittings. The door to the toilets had this nice ripple glass, so i wrote "water cl...

I'd like to get some additional comments from people about using vinyl for light sand-blasting. I don't often need it, but sometimes i need to get some etching done (I've given up doing it myself because I don't have a proper cabinet) I've got some really good sand-blast mask that works very well, b...

Yes, nice find...Which shop is it? I'll go and have a look next time I am in Sydney. $9000 is hitting pretty hard, but i suppose the days of finding bargain prices on old mirrors is going to disappear completely, if it hasn't already. wow. This is really extraordinary. It really takes you straight into a world 100 years ago. Re: Album cover critic
I don't mind playing "devil's advocate". The critic actually makes some perceptive observations on the album covers. He is reacting to the images and explaining his impression. All of us react to art, any kind of art, but being able to articulate that reaction is a skill in itself. The ver...

Re: Toughened glass
I'm curious about why you are using an epoxy? I can only assume it's because you intend to do some chemical silvering for a mirror background afterwards. Is there another reason for choosing this material? (for any new readers who aren't familiar with mirroring/epoxies....if you want to make a decor...

Re: Toughened glass
My most recent project was on toughened glass and I had an interesting conversation with a glass specialist recently about it. He does a lot with kiln-work as well as sand-blasting. He told me that toughened actually scratches more easily than float. I always assumed the toughening process caused lo...

Yes, beautiful work. A really fine selection of photos. I especially like the fact that every photo has a reason to be included. Re: Introduction, and of course, a few questions!
I would avoid red chalk. For some reason, that particular color can stain a white background and is impossible to remove. As for the chalk hills....after you've pounced it, lightly brush over it with a soft brush. This will knock off all the excess chalk but will leave enough for you to see the layo...

i've been using neatsfoot oil for the last 10-12 years. Mainly because I bought a tin of it over a decade ago and it has taken that long to use it. Re: The Art of Gold Leaf Glass Signs
Erik is right about the this. To name a handful of practitioners in this particular way gives a false impression of the scope of the art. I have no problem with citing a few key leading artists if you feel it's important, but it's also good to be aware of not falling into a trap of cult-like exclusi...

Some of the phrasing seems familiar to me. I'm sure I've read something very similar before in the same style... Anyway...I wanted to chime in with a correction. Erik already noted correctly the thing about "a few gilders". And there is a related point about Rick Glawson. Now, first let me...

Nice work Jeff, Good to see. I assume you etched the lines in the back of the gold and backed it up with black. It's a nice techniques, but I found it quite time-consuming. Also, I found you need to take a lot of gold off to get visual strength into the engraved image. When you're working on the bac...
