Re: First Attempt

I have a question. Are you beginning to learn hand lettering with enamel sign paint, or tempera water color? Back in sign arts class(1972), I began hand lettering with tempera colors and red sable brushes. I believe it is better to begin with water colors for several reasons. First, there is less of...

Re: precursor to LED signs

Bruce, I think you nailed it! That is the "wedged shape CIGARS sign" I mentioned. Also the (possible R&E sign) with the jewels would be lit from within. (I see from the front wall sign now the it says "HANAN SHOES"). And look also at the _ Cook Specialist sign, also a wedge g...

Another Rawson & Evans style sign and more. http://www.shorpy.com/node/7457?size=_original Check out the partially visible R&E style sign (___NAN SHOES) with lighted jeweled letters and mirror bevel accents. Can't read the makers name clearly (bottom center) and the bevel designs don't match...

This is a short 1970 film with Johnny Crawford (Chuck Connors, The Rifleman)
The sound is poor, but the rest is cool. He would have been right at home(Larry's) at the end of the line in Machine.

Re: chipping bent glass

Doug, I would do your work while it is flat. Much easier. And as you mentioned, the way it used to be done in the past. Now the important part since you do not bend these yourself in house on regular occasion. You will have put a lot of time and labor into this piece before handing it over to the be...

Re: Glass Tombstones

I believe there is a difference in the chemistry for "gluing" and the chemistry of "laminating". I was repairing a crack in my 1981 Ford truck's windshield and the UV glue bottle leaked a few drops onto the fender. It immediately dissolved and blistered the solvent based factory ...

Will you be laminating with your own UV cure laminating liquid in house or sending it out to a local laminating company?

Have you found a suitable coating to protect the decorated areas?
Or would the etching be laminated between the glass?

Re: How to make Bon Ami soap cakes

Wow Erik, I had NO IDEA that soap molecules could be so EROGENOUS. All this time I figured that I was sexually aroused by the intimate act of gilding or silvering glass. But you have taught me that my feelings are on a much higher level. I must go now, as I have prepared a hot bath of luxurious Bon ...

Re: Gold prices

Rod, I think the only problem with stocking up on gold leaf is that the ambient temperature changes, and humidity changes may affect the adhesion of the rosin coated paper leaves, on loose leaf anyway. Even if they are unopened, funny things seem to happen, materials can migrate with time. Might mak...

Re: one shot on leather

I made some custom rocker guitar straps with Bauhaus designs sand blasted and painted with the resist in place. I used water based white semi gloss house paint. Worked great. The sandblasting roughed up the leather and the paint fused right into the texture.

Gold prices

Surprise. I was rummaging through an old file cabinet and found a dusty little baggie of 24K finegold nuggets weighing in at .215 troy ounces. Just for kicks I called the refiner that had refined them back in 2003. In 2003 the average price per ounce of 24K fine gold was $319.00 per troy oz. Today t...

Re: The Gales of November

I don't know about lettering Big ships, but my Dad bought a sailboat with a cast iron hull that had 3/4" rigging and was designed to sail the North Sea. Being that I had purchased quills and was taking a sign painting class at Pasadena City College, I offered to paint the name across the stern....

Re: The making of sheet glass

Erik, I would like to know any sources you find for flashed glass, especially red on clear. And I would like it in fairly large sheets to be used in door panels. In the 70's and 80's I used to buy it in fairly small sizes from Hollander's Glass in Stanton, Ca. but they became discontent with their s...

Re: The making of sheet glass

Jerry, Contact Dave Smith, he mentioned to me that he had a viable source for flashed glass over there. Well, now I am curious, because ALL the Stateside sources I used to use have stopped importing. I now would like to know if I could possibly order a crate from the German or French manufacturer. I...

Re: One-Shot Hear=ye, hear-ye!!

I have been asked about ratios and how to mix One Shot with the NazDar overclear. First I think that the latitude of ratios is very wide without degrading the outcome. (go figure) I almost think of using the overclear in OneShot as BETTER than using the OneShot Hardener. In fact i think I have given...

I also pointed Rick here for SMALT GLASS years ago. A good source for "glassies".

Re: The making of sheet glass

Maybe some are not interested. Maybe they have not currently worked it into the s...

One-Shot Hear=ye, hear-ye!!

Hear-ye Hear-ye. I have become so disgruntled with some products lately, and One-Shot is one of them. Some colors like Black take forever to dry. Most no longer stick to glass or sandblasted surfaces as well as they used to, usually pulling up with the mask in the direction of the pull. (I could kil...

Guilty as charged, on two counts, and in two countries now Erik. My plea is "do as I say, and not as I do" . For me, I think that it comes from my years of being a mechanic and handling car batteries. When you gradually became aware that something was creating a biting feeling on the tende...

Bruce, I was back today admiring your work and I began to wonder how you created the clean full gold boarder prior to beginning the white gold especially at the top radius. Re: gilding a mirror in leaf

Bruce, That is a fine looking antique mirror look. But since there is only one layer of leaf and there will be micro tears and voids that will appear after burnishing, what have you chosen to back up the leaf with? Is it simply black enamel or a mixture of gray? Would you use a different backup colo...
