Kiln Gold mirror finish experiment

Post by DAVE SMITH »

Thought I would share this with you guy's . You may never need this or want to use it but its worth knowing especially for branding glass jugs and glass trophies, wine glasses etc....I tried this technique a few years back, ended up opening the kiln to early and snaping the glass. I had some better success over the weekend on several pieces which I used a higher percentage of gold concentrate. 12% gold
This glass panel was stripped of its mirror finish and then I acid etched the text.
I then applied a mask and coated the letters including brightlines with Bright Kiln Gold (brushed) ,I let it set up for about 2 hours striped the mask and let it dry over night. Next day placed it in the kiln face up and took the heat up to 620dgr held it there for 15 minutes. On some of the letters towards the end it started to burn the gold but overall with some more tests and times I think it will work very well for small projects .Cost is an issue and against any Angel Gilding supplies this falls flat on it's face but if you have a kiln and would like to try it out I reccomend giving it a go as the finish is an excellent shine and deep gold 25crt finish.

I love it ! You better stand by that kiln alot cauce when you get to Vegas it gonna be HOT !!
I used to use a gold for firing on to tile and ceramics call Luster.I wonder if it's the same thing.

Cheers
