Thanks again everyone.....I started my 17 day fair,
www.thebige.com on thurs. and today is my first day off.
I use eastern white pine. Ya didn't ask , but it's because...
1. it's white (ish) so I can do my color staining.
2. it's a traditional carving wood here in the northeast.
3. It's available!!!!!!!!! (in pretty wide boards)
4. It's reasonably soft so I can carve it pretty quickly with these tired old hands
5. The burnish that comes off the heal of the tools on the EW pine, gives me a little more control of the stains ( they don't penatrate as quickly as they wood (couldn't resist

) in sugar pine)
6. The grain pattern (well defined spring and summer wood) really helps to enhance the illusion of a full 3D piece.
So that's it.....lotsa chores to do today, then back to the Big E!
Thanks again
Joe
