I was looking around for a brand of metallic gold spray paint for an upcoming project and ran across this video.
Valspar says their metallic paint is rated for outdoor use:

Krylon is interior only.
I have a can of Dutch Boy instant Chrome here, but I don't see a gold version on their web site.
Has anyone here had good luck with any brand of metallic gold paint for outdoors?
The sign I am working on will have black letters against some sort of "gold" bubble outline panel and set against some natural cedar. There will be some 23k gold in the mix, but I am looking for something fairly durable we can afford.
Thanks in advance,
Mike Jackson

I know nothing about valspar, and would be hesitant to use without a test first.
Rustoleum exterior/interior metalics are the best rattle can: http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=30
Other than Rustoleum, the best I've found comes in quarts, but no rattle can version, and is made by Ronan. I have Inca Gold, and several grades of brass in the shop that I've used for several golf courses at Lake Tahoe. Those have been up from 2 - 6 years w/o problems. I talked to Ronan before ordering as it was a new product at the time. It's a waterborne paint tinted/or mixed with mica and UV inhibitors, which will not fade.

The only problem I've found with the Ronan Aqua Leaf Metallics is they're less than opaque. Best way to coat out larger letters / graphics is with a spray gun with 2-3 light coats.

I've heard some good things about Modern Masters. Haven't tried it but
maybe someone else can comment. It's acrylic. They have a number of flavors.

I use Duplicolor Perfect Match or Motomaster Near Match spray bombs. When doing gold I use a few shades and mist them on in streaks, it gives some nice dimension/sparkle on larger letters.
If using on plastic I use the bumper versions. Because they are made for vehicles they hold up well. The mica in them reflects the light and they can really glow.

I believe there is no shame in failure. Rather, the shame lies in the loss of all the things that might have been, but for the fear of failure.

Hey guys... Yes the Modern Masters paint works well, did the entire Denver Botanical Gardens' info stands in it and hadn't gotten any complaints. We used the copper color. It thins with water and we cleared it too with I think Modern Masters satin clear. They were quite durable and easy to paint.
