Looking for any info on finish for wood signs (White Cedar) exterior uses, stained and natural finishes.

In the past we have been using spar varnish the same quality as used on the mahogany boats around here. The result is not long lasting enough for signs. Boats are kept in boathouses and not in the sun. Would like some acrylic or latex finish but we are not familiar with any exterior stuff.

Tomahawk was fun.

Have done many outdoor carved signs..in fact probably thousands over the years and for natural finish i wouldn't hesitate to use sikkens. The cetol colour of choice...one or 2 coats and the REQUIRED..TGL finish coats, at least 2. The spar varnish mixture won't hold up as you have mentioned but the sikkens stuff only requires a cleaning and a fresh coat of TGL every so many years....depending on weather and sun exposure. Good luck!

As a clear finish that is easy to apply and has an accepatable life span, waterborne UV clear from Chromatic, still produced by 1Shot. It is a pure acrylic with UV inhibitors and has excellent adhesion properties. It is the extended life version of Ti-Cote we developed long before all the mergers and acquisitions.
