Software for managing and manipulating photographs

I'm interested in purchasing software to manage and edit photographs. I have been told that ACDSee 6.0 PowerPack by ACD Systems and Adobe’s Photoshop Album are products worth consideration.

Does anyone have experience with either of these products? I would appreciate any comments on the above software, or recommendations for other products you might be using.

Thanks in advance,
Ron

I sure like CompuPic Pro made by Photodex.Another program that I used for a couple years that was good is Thumbs.

Hi Ron,
I am in the market for something new, too.

I was a pretty happy camper using NikonView, a little program that came with my Nikon990 camera and again with the 3100 camera. The program would import or capture images from my camera or Smart Media card reader, and put them into a new folder within my photos folder.

From there, I could view the images in the folder, delete unwanted pics, rename them, and so forth. The program looked very similar to opening My Computer, with directory trees on the left and images on the right. I could move the new photos easily into the folders just by dragging them around. We put the utility on our main computers and Darla and I could access the images from a single server computer.

Back at the end of January, I bought a new Nikon D70 digital camera. For whatever reason, the images created by the new camera won't work within NikonView. I had to uninstall it an install the new program, and I really don't like the way it works. Maybe I haven't figured it out completely. It captures the photos fine, but after that, it piles all the photos or links to the original photos into one giant album. I had well over 10,000 photos on my 990 and probably 5,000 on my little 3100, so I can't image wanting to have to scroll throuh all of them each time.

After that, I loaded Adobe Photoshop Album we purchased a year or so ago. It might do more than I want, but it doesn't do the simple tasks I was used to in NikonView. I searched all over the Internet and downloaded a few freeware utilities, and of the group Irfanview seemed to work similar to NikonView, with a few small quirks. I loaded it on Darla's machine, only to learn it would not recognize network drives (It might work if I "mapped" the local drive on her system)

I keep meaning to call Nikon to see if I am missing something in their new package, or see if they have a different utility that worked with the new camera with a similar interface as NikonView.

Maybe I should check out the other two programs Rick suggested above.

Hi again,
I don't know if the company saw my previous post, if it was just an alignment fo the stars, but I received an email from
http://www.ipswitch.com/products/WS_FTP ... index.html
a little while ago. I downloaded their free 30 day trial program and it is exactly what I needed to replace the old NikonView program. On several tests, it passed them with flying colors.

It opens and handles the large Nikon D70 photos with no problem, and allows us to easily email photos out of the program without harming the originals...something Darla really wanted. It works across our network, though I will have to buy two licenses. I don't mind spending the money if it works and does what I needed it to do.
