Kent SmithI'm working on a 2 x 6 ft. glass piece that I want to edge light. It's interior and I'm open to all suggestions about the lighting. I think I know what I'm going to do, but since I haven't done it YET, I'm open to advice.
Robert BeverlyI prefer 1/2" thick glass for this application with pencil polished edges. I prefer neon as floursecent flickers some and other light sources just don't have the intensity I like to see, especially if only lighting from one edge. I prefer 6500 white for most glass as it burns through the green hue of the glass. 4500 white is good for clearer glass and if you incorporate gold leaf, 3500 has more yellow spectrum to enhance the look. I have also used colors and especially like lavendar and neo blue. It is easy to build a sheet metal retainer for the tube and since there is not a lot of footage, I use a small sized transitorized transformer which takes up little room. Let me know if you need more specifics.

Jeffrey P. LangWe do a fair amount of edge lit glass....and as Rick said...the impact and applicational possibilities would reflect the work you are displaying...and the thickness of glass and depth of art going into it. We have used neon...rope light...and are now using leds...so fill us in and I can suggest my direction...oh...also the price would help!...Rope is the cheapest...leds the most expensive...but where it goes will effect it as well...is there room to stick a transformer?...etc...
Rick SacksCarol,
I have not edge lit glass, but have edge lit plexiglass that was routed. I have used flourescent bulbs with success, but preferred white neon 10mm for the 1/2" plex.
I wrapped silver mylar around the flourescent bulb execpt where it went against the edge & it helped concentrate the light source.
If you use neon, it can be bent to follow an irregular edge & I feel gives a better look.
Let us know what you do.
Good luck,
Jeff
Carol, how thick is the glass? I'd assume thicker glass would be more effective.
