Making Varnish

Post by Roderick Treece »

I recently purchased an gallon of Naptha solvent. On the can it says "Varnish Makers and painters Naptha".Does anyone know why you would use Naptha for making varnish?

I think that is an excellent question - because I don't know exactly what "varnish" is. There is shellac varnish, spar varnish, long oil varnish (I assume linseed oil) and short oil varnish and, these days, polyurethane varnish - and no doubt many others. The old recipes for stained glass putty talk about adding so many drops of "varnish tears". I don't think they mean shellac but when they mean linseed oil they say that - the varnish they are refering to is someting different - but they don't tell you what.
