If it ain't broke, don't fix it?

Post by Mike Jackson »

Today, I sat down at my main design computer and decided to run the Microsoft updates and patches for my Win2000 machine. I had 43 patches to download and install for a total of 31 megs of files. Luckily, I am on Broadband, so the download part wasn't that terrible. After the download and installation, the software wanted to restart the machine. I did.

After restarting, the basic screens came up, then the final screen appeared, but the hard drive was spinning away. It took close to 15 minutes before the hard drive finally stopped. Of course, during that time, I kept hoping somethig wasn't deleting all the files on my machine. Luckily, everything reloaded fine and I am back in business.

I've heard the old expression "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" quite a few times in relation to computers. Certainly, this presents a Catch-22 situation. Without the patches and updates, computers can be more vulnerable to hackers and back door virus openings. In hind-sight, I am glad I ran the update, but it can be a bit spooky during the process.

I still need to run the update on quite a few more computers.

Win2000 patches

Post by alf toy »

If you are adventurous you might try slipstreaming your patches into an install CD. Then you could do a fresh install of Win2k and patches at the same time. You normally backup your work files anyways so you might as well back it up and clear out clutter from old installs and reinstalls etc. Saves fretting about trashing your machine.
