Research.....

Post by Doug Fielder »

Hello again,

I was always taught that research is the key to successful design, so besides A Magazine About Letterheads and the other Sign mags, what or where do you commonly look for design ideas and Inspiration?

Places I have found for good design inspiration:
Liquor store, Wine and Whiskey Bottles
Grocery Store shelves
Communication Arts, How and Print Magazines
Victorian Trading Cards, thanks Larry.
Antique Sign Painter's Manuals
Alan Johnson's Garage

So, I think this could help lots of new-comers to the industry and even introduce eachother to new ideas.

...Not that they will pertain much to sign creation, but GRAFFITI MAGAZINES are full of amazing work and eye candy.

Having grown up in NJ, and not knowing there were grafiti magazines.... Must have lived a sheltered life!

Another of my favorite magazines is Juxtapoz, a magazine about all the crazy art being done in the world. Which does from time to time feature grafiti artists.

Old letterheads, catalogs and bill of sales on ebay.

Old lettering books beside the signpainter/showcard book a few of us have, again on ebay.

Leslie Carbarga has a great book with his collection os letterheads.

I just bought the book seen in AMOL a year or so ago called:
Der praktische Schildermaler (The Practical SignPainter) from 1910 by H. J. Jedlitschka.
I searched the book online because of its incredible color plates and effects samples, and found only 1 in the whole internet that was a failed auction in Germany, but the owner has decided to sell it to me.
What a score!

Hey Doug... I got your e-mail

The truck layouts I had posted come from a book by:
Motorbooks International
Title: Commercial trucks
Auth: Donald Wood
Pub: 1993

Other resources

clubs and organizations, old sign guys, trade magazines (some old ones sell cheap on e-bay) and I have a pretty good collection of "how to" books published by old sign guys like Mathews, Fitgerald..... etc. have sample photos from a wide range of historic eras.

if you ask around there in VT you might find some of Si Allens early drawings!.... :P  :P

Hey Geet,

I am a big fan of Motorbooks, as a motorhead I get their catalog all the time. I will have to buy that one. Thank you.
As for old sign guys, the oldest one I have met was Bob Fitzgerald, there is a funny story about that (posted somewhere on here) but he told me he was too old and that nobody handlettered anything anymore. I wish I had his building and all his old stuff!
Anyway, I will also have to check the Shelburne Museum for such items.

Where did Si live? I've lived all over this state and am now looking to move out.
