Can scratches in glass be removed?

I have some old plate glass windows and glass shelving that has some scratches in them. I was just wondering if its possible to work those scrathces out.

Yes and no. Very minor abrasions can be removed with cerium oxide or other abrasive materials, used on a felt wheel. Deep scratches will take more time to remove than the cost of new glass. In addition, by removing a deep scratch, you would likely end up with a divot deeper than the scratch.
