2005 Fall Photos

I did some maintenance on my site of photos and made the slide shows easier to scoll through last week and have the site back up and running. I add to the photos when I have time and energy.

There is an image in the Wenzel folios that shows an owl with his wing in the position seen in the photo above. It must be a natural post for that species.

Mike, those photos are magnificent!

Thanks so much for sharing them.

Not to go too far off topic, but,...

How is the D70 holding up?

I know this has been hashed, and re-hashed, but I have been tossing back and forth between getting a Nikon D70, or a Canon 20D. I have a few Canon lenses from my A1, some are nice 50mm 1.2, and 1.4's.

I believe the Canon does not have a spot meter (just 9% I believe), but the Nikon does have a spot meter. I am just a big fan of spot meters from the Canon F1 days.

The Nikon is less expensive, but I have some Canon lenses, but I like the Nikon price, and stats. hmmmmmmmm....

Any experience from comparisons between the two?

Once again, beautiful photo, thanks for sharing.

Peace out,
Bob

Bob,
The D70 has over 16,000 shots on it right now! ...and going strong. For the price, I think it is a great camera. If you already have Canon lenses, I'd suggest looking that direction first. When out in the field, I see a lot of both. From what I can see, the Canons are heavier and sometimes more expensive for comparable equipment.

I think the D70 hit a nice spot in the market with good features and a fair price.

Roderick,
These are photographs, taken by myself over the past couple of months. I recently added a new "Art Images" pair of slide shows. I graphically edited my photos to have more of a watercolor or oil painting look using Photoshop and filters.

The Great Gray Owl reminded me of one of the plates in my Wenzel portfolio. Maybe I can scan it someday.

I just uploaded about 60 new photos and fixed a couple of crippled links. I believe most of the site is functioning fine, so go have a new look.

Full Page.

This is the page I was thinking of. I found it in the last of 8 folios I searched through (of course), but it was still nice to get to flip through the rest.

The small detail image was the one I had in my head...with the wings sitting off his back like the photo.

For anyone interested, I spent some more time reworking the overall appearance and flow of the photography section, including adding a few more photos here and there.

http://www.goldenstudios.com/colors/index.html

For anyone who has ever made a web site, it often takes a little time and experimentation to get the "vision" completely worked out. I am pretty happy with it right now, so it probably won't change much for a while, except to add new photos.

My web design class is about over, but I am right in the middle of a Digital Photography/Photoshop class right now. I am learning a lot!

Mike,

The site looks fantastic.

The photos are just awesome.

The scenery is just spectacular.

Wow.

What web design software did you use? What class/tutorial are you using?

Thanks in advance.

Bob

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the comments.

I signed up for a class in basic web design, mainly to get a student ID so I could order a brand new Adobe CS2 suite of programs at a huge discount. (Photoshop, Illustrator, GoLive, and Acrobat). The web design class was taught on Microsoft Front Page. I didn't care for that program so I continued with GoLive which was okay with the instructor. The class gave me an addtional incentive to make the photo pages. I learned how to do several new things inside a web site which should translate into better pages on this site in the future. In short, I got to experiment a lot with the site and with the software. What you see there now is probably the third or fourth generation of the basic design of the site.

Lastly, I have been using the tutorials at http://www.lynda.com for the past few years. They have quick time clips for learning just about any graphics program. I find them much more informative and intuitive than trying to read along in a book. Some of the programs include: Illustrator, Corel Draw, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Golive, Front Page, Corel Painter, InDesign, Acrobat, and the list goes on and on. For $25 per month, you can watch any video on any title.

Thanks Mike.

A good friend of mine had been doing the tutorials at lynda.com, and he said they are well done. He also has been doing the Photoshop one.

I have been out and about riding my bicycle in the little town I live in of Peru NY. The town has been around since 1792, with a rich tradition of Macintosh apples. They are some of the largest Macintosh orchards in the world.

Great late fall scenery, and weather. A lot of wildlife getting ready to hunker-on-down for the long haul. Great times to be on the bike.

Anyway, I have been on the bike photographing the community, and scenery trying to document the town as it is now. Maybe a little local book is in order, hmmmm

Thanks again.

Peace out,
Bob

Hi Mike -

Very nice work, as usual! The changing photo on the front-end is a very nice touch and I like the rough edges for the prints. Gives them a more "Rustic" feel.

The layout and colors of the site are very appealing, and the photos, well what can I say, just great.

The basic web design class you mentioned, is that a local class or online?

When you start taking winter photos I guess you'll have to build another site?

Ron,
The web class was offered through the local "college" as a night course. The photo class is offered through the Art Center. The web class was held at the computer graphics lab at the high school. I took the class mainly to get the student ID to get discounted software. I wanted to hear what the teacher said about web design, file sizes, search engines, and so forth, but I didn't get much info about the software I use. It was interesting, but not necessarily too needed after about 6 years of building pages.

I shot a few Winter scenes in the last week or so, but I am not ready to begin a new section. I hope to get out some tomorrow, too.

Take care,
