Save some money on your Network Solutions domain names

Post by Mike Jackson »

Hi all,
One of my web sites was due for renewal with Network Solutions. They normally charge $34.95 per year when paid by the year. This site and some of my other sites are stored with Canaca.com and they offer to service the domain name for $9.95 per year. I have been fairly happy with them so I planned on moving the site(s) over as they come up for renewal. I placed the order with Canaca, but got a notice back saying the client transfer was prohibited at Network Solutions.

When I called Network Solutions today, I told them I needed to remove that block and that I was moving the service to Canaca. When she asked me if the cost was the only reason I was moving, I told her yes. She then told me they can match the $9.95 per year fee, saving $25 a year.

So, if and when your site is up for renewal, tell them you are planning on moving it to Canaca and I believe they will give you the same discount. Also, the $9.95 per year rate carries forward to following years.

While on the topic, you can register a new domain name at Canaca (and lots of other places) for only $10. That's way down from the old days of around $100 per domain when I first started. I think GoDaddy and others may be as low as $6.95 per domain registration.

Hi Roderick,
I am sure there are a LOT of companies with low prices. When many of us first got set up on the Internet, Network Solutions was about the only game in town and many of us "had" to sign up with them. They still have a huge chunk of the market, however they have maintained their relatively high cost of renewal in the light of all the competition. The point of my post was to inform people still using Network Solutions is the fact they will drop their price for renewals if you tell them you are planning on switching to another host.
