To Pine or not to Pine

Post by Mike Jackson »

I've had my XM Radio tuned to the Holly Channel lately and keep hearing the word "pine" or "pining" a lot. It's not a word I use daily, so I looked it up. It might be in a couple of other seasonal songs, but here are two of them.

Home For The Holidays
When you pine for the sunshine of a friendly gaze
For the holidays you can't beat home, sweet home

O' Holy Night
Long lay the world in sin and error pining

pining n : a feeling of deep longing

Based on the above, I guess I should be doing a bit of pining.

Happy Holidays,

My favorite is...

"...the only job you're gonna get in here is pushing up daisies from a pine box. Now get out!"

...or from the famous Monty Python pet store sketch where the bird in the cage is hanging upside down from its perch. The shopkeeper tells John Cleese: "He's not dead...he's pining. Pining for the fjords!"
