size update

Post by Doug Bernhardt »

Well...followed all directions below and the results were better but not as good as I had hoped. In the past I've used a 50/50 mixture of 24hr and 12hr size with great open times and an excellent gild...no patchy appearance here!! The problem was the 24 hr size is hard to get and the last few times I did it had serious fisheye problems. These could be attributed to the new acrylic laquers I use as a UV clearcoat or other. All to say the new mixture-open time was better than straight 12hr ,as in it was still good and fresh this morning after sizing yesterday at about 3pm, BUT the gild wasn't as "sweet" as the old mixture. Will work these things out in the future and post away as usual!

Doug,

what brand of UV clear coat are you using? Sizing over 1 shot acrylic UV clear coat, even days later, will accelerate the drying time of the size. Check the contents of the clear your using,1 shot acrylic clear contain ingredients that cause this, which is not a good thing.

Dan...am using Clearstar and Mann Bros. These are in no way similar to frogjuice or the 1 shot. They aren't an issue here. These are similar to a crosslinked acrylic laquer. ....and don't ask me the chemistry! Now it did stay open longer but not as cool a gild as the 24hr. Am getting the idea to put up with the difficulty getting it and find a way to deal with the fisheyes.

Hi again Dan.....Thats actually adding silicone to the size if my info/guess is correct.....it's one of those things I hate having arround the shop as once you got it in the system everything seems to get contaminated.

I don't see any info regarding the contents Doug, but it's listed purpose is to eliminate fish eye where silicone may be present. It also says it improves flow-out and increases gloss. When I've experienced problems it has helped.

John should jump in here as he'd be able to add to the topic. I experienced problems once and John pulled some smoothie from his kit ,said to add a drop or two to the paint, and it worked well.

Any auto body supply house, or possibly a sign supply outlet like McLogans or Ordway.
