Dickinson again...Different versions of the same art...

Post by Larry White »

At a Letterhead meeting held at my shop in back in 2005 in Hayward, CA, many of the folks attending created a ficticious Dickinson Metal Works sign. Here are a few pictures of some of the completed ones. It's always quite interesting to see different people's takes on the same artwork.

Many thanks to John Yarnell & Danny Baronian for assisting me in taking my pencil drawing into the computer and then the creation of the silkscreens for printing. We wanted to ensure everything was going to work and that the prints and etching stencils would all register, so we got together ahead of time and made a few. ...all went well...

Image

This was the first test piece. "Dickinson" letter centers are glue chipped and "Iron Works" and "Metal Works Company" are acid etched. The panel was then Angel Gilded and the back-up was printed, followed by a black print. I put a transparent split shade on "Dickinson" and backed it in abalone. "Metal Works Company" has a blended water gild over the acid etched centers, and the drop shadow is painted. The small oval is backed in Mother of Pearl. The center panel is a faux marble and the background is painted a single tone of pale yellow. ...I smell...beans...

Image

I wanted to create one that looked a bit more rustic, so I created this copper version. This one was copper deposition for the main gilding. I did a two texture mica etch on the Dickinson letter centers, left the bottom copper, water gilded the top 22K moon gold. I used bronze powders for the "Metal Works" drop shadow and an 18K surface gild on the background of the small oval. Made a replicated rust panel for the background with Sophisticated Finishes metalic paints and patinas. Used a piece of exotic hardwood for the center panel. Still working on taking better pictures, but you get the idea. ...I thought weez hired exclusive...

Image

This one had no glass surface alteration, just straight Angel Gild over the glass. The gild back-up was screen printed, then followed by a black print. "Dickinson" was done with 18K matte centers and a blended gray drop shadow. "Metal Works" 22K moon gold surface gild with burnished stripes. Abalone center on small oval. A faux rusted finish for horizontal panel. Background is actual redwood slats mounted to backing board, then sandblasted. ...and of coarse, the pictorial of Mr. Dickinson...
...some are born to sweet delight, some are born to gild all night...

Image

This one was done by Doug Philips. It is strictly a sandblasted version. It also includes some depth carving and a photo resist of Mr. Dickinson. ...you keep your hands off his hair...

.Image

This is also a strictly sandblasted version created by John Yarnell
...back to work Mr. Olafson...

Anyone else that has theirs completed, post a picture with a description

Here's my test...and only piece produced prior to the meet with the exception of the blended letter centers on Dickenson. Oval backed with mop, rusted center panel, and blended mica powders for Metal Works Company, painted background.

Larry needed the practice.....

Post by Kelly Thorson »

Well, Larry asked me to post mine too, sorry about the picture quality, I'm going to have to work on photographing glass...

It is so interesting seeing how every one puts their own spin on the same artwork.

It's ok, but I don't like the drop shadow.

Nice bracket though....

My boy Dickinson is chipped!

This one's mine,

that certainly was an excellent gathering you had, Larry
I know you said we was thru and all but
you know, I really didn't want to leave...

any way
and he took that golden hair and made a sweater for baby bear.

If I had to choose....

Post by Laura Butler »

Larry,
I have loved your work and designs since the first time that you posted your website at letterheads.com. I also love seeing the way each piece is different. But if I had to choose, it would be a toss up between Kelly's and Doug Phillips. I like the more neutral colors.

OK
I finally finished my project.
Image
I used the copper mirror solution on all the lettering. The band across the middle is airbrushed to look like a diamond plate strip, dropped behind everything else. The rest of the background is airbrushed with black japan color for depth and to define bolts and rivets but then I did various treatments of aluminum leaf and aluminum powder to finish the different surfaces. The rivets are 16kt.
I wanted to carry through the monochromatic theme of the B&W film and the cold, depressing feeling of steel and metal.
It was fun.

:D

Hey there Mr. Seese!

A very nice and interesting approach to the background on this job, it looks great.

Is the background done in reverse on the "Machine" glass or did you do it on another piece of glass for the background? If it was reverse, boy what a challange - deck plate and rivets in reverse.

Hi Ron.
I did it all in reverse on the glass. As is always the case, it's pretty unforgiving so there are elments I'm not happy with but lets not talk about that.

I don't give a plate glass what anybody says, Dan,
you sure make a creative riveted background.
Nice idea, and darn fine execution.

Well, Doug wanted to try his hand at sandblasting another DMW sign at a larger size, 46"x 30", truth be told. He also created a darn nice frame from some recycled molding and employed Rodderick Treece's Haggard Frame Finish techniques.

Hey, Rodderick, you may have a product there! ...or at least an inspiration for another glass sign! ...course, someone your age, jeez, if you was to gild one of them-...RODDERICK TREECE'S....HAGGARD...FRAME...FINISH...

...you'd be a libbin' legend...

Here's another one that Doug Philips created. He removed the center horizontal panel to create a continuous solid toned background. He also employed RT's HFF on this one. NICE!! :D You always get that darn reflection when photographing glass. Are those horns sticking out of Mr. Dickinson's head... :? ...interesting...
