Casualty of using a digital camera

Post by Mike Jackson »

Yesterday, Darla and I delivered a couple of 4 x 8 panels. In the days BDC (before Digital Cameras), we had lots and lots of plastic film containers that we filled with touch up paint to include with a job. We scotch taped a couple of Q-Tips to the bottle so the customers could cover up the screw heads ("could" being the operative word). Anyway, I dug around in the little bin and couldn't find any more film containers! I can't even remember the last time I shot a roll or film. I found another little plastic bottle and delivered the job, but now I need to pick up an alternative container for future jobs.

EBottles.com sells all kind of plastic bottles, so I know a source, but it is just a sign of the times that the old film canisters are becoming extinct. In a flash from the past, I can remember seeing an article in my old "Boy's Life" magazine when I was a Cub Scout or Boy Scout. In that article, the writer illustrated one of the old metal canisters for the scarf tie. They added a loop, then filled the canister with a needle, thread, buttons, and so forth. I remember looking around for a metal canister, but by that time, most film was starting to be sold in plastic bottles.

Mike -

Wow, that was close!! I thought you were going to tell us about being out fishing and dropping the D70 in the river, or even worse.

Before you going paying for new containers try the local photo processing places, especially the one hour variety, they usually just toss them into a bin for recycle. I've asked in the past and their attitude has been pretty much, "No problem, help yourself to all you want".

Just a thought, HTH.

Hi Ron,
I had already thought of asking at the local Camera America one hour place. I have a CD copied with a bunch of tif files to get enlarged to 8x12 tomorrow, so I will get a bag of them then.

Between the fall foliage and the abnormal visibility of the large mammals, I shot a lot of photos though my D-70 now....roughly 15,600 since January. :)

Mike - I still have a five gallon bucket full of those cannisters from the old 50 cent days.

I would be glad to bring them up to you - just send me a check for the airfare and incidental expenses and they are yours...for free.

Back in my show card days I kept custom mixed colors of tempra in those. I would stick a round price tag type paper sticker on the top and daub a bit of color on it so that I could see what was in the container. Not much need for show cards now.

Ray,
Those must have been the days. Just got an original edition of Strong's "The Art of Show Card Writing" 1919/1922 Detroit School of Lettering. Lawrence and Charles Strong. Truly fascinating
throughout. The Paasche and Speedball ads in the back of the book are great.
I have gone completely nuts collecting the "teaching" history of the sign business. Guess I'll have to put the Sign Museum in my will.

Hi again,
I copied some photos to a CD, took them in to the camera place. When I picked up the prints, I managed to bring home a nice sized sack of empty canisters. I should be in pretty good shape for quite a while.

I have a 4"x6" printer here that does a great job. I wanted to see what a few of them looked like printed out at 8"x12". Wow! They look great!

Mike, go to a one hour photo, or the film drop-off area of a local drug store, or dept store. I'm sure you can get all you need.

Peace out,
Bob

Bob beat me to the punch. The one hour photo stores don't use the film containers. You can get enough for years from their one day stash. Last time I did that, they sent me home with a large grocery sack filled nearly overflowing.

Kinda funny....in my last addition to this thread, I said:

Seems like I beat both of you to the punch!

I have found 5 Dram pill bottles work real well and are cheap, about 10c each, I buy a case of 500 at a time and wrap the lids with electrical taape, so they should stay fresh for some time....Just my 2 cents
