Mexican bus lettering

Post by Reid Fisher »

Pardon my abundant ignorance(!!), I just fortuitously found your amazing forum in the course of a search:

Many Mexican second-class buses are hand-lettered in a distinctive, ornate style I'd like to locate an alphabet for (OK, I want to label my 1947 Ford tractor). Living in California, I see this style on occasion, but can't find a sample alphabet, since at least as used by Mexican immigrants, it's more or less a folk tradition, not something I've found online.

Any resources you folks could steer me to? Thanks again, and keep up this great tradition!

Some I've seen recently were an Old English Script. If you decide on this one, PLEASE, use Caps and lower case. NOT ALL CAPS. I recently saw some very nice hand lettering in Oaxaca, both on vehicles and on very rough walls. Nice to see handlettering again; and well done.

Having lived along the mexican border a large part of my life, most of the vehicle lettering I remember seeing was some sort of "Old English" and there were different flourishes on each one depending on the artist. Most also had a different color or shade brushed onto the lower portion of the letter making it two tone. For instance, a yellow letter with the lower part done in orange or red.

Reid,
If you are checking back on this thread, maybe you can snap a photo of a sign or bus with lettering you are talking about. After that, someone here might be able to be more specific with their responses.
