Glass Glue?

Post by Doug Bernhardt »

Have heard of an adhesive to glue broken pieces together. Am trying out the UV glue sold by Letterheads Supply right now on a test piece. I did a glass job a few years ago and a corner was knocked off during a renovation, but I have heard of something incredible for this purpose. Any suggestions?

Doug,

Jeff's right, it's Locktite. Pat Mackle uses locktite UV # 349 which he uses for trophies. It's a thicker glue that when assembled won't squeeze out beyond the intended joint and leave a mess like the thinner glue tends to do.

Another Locktite UV glue is # 363 which is thinner. It's used for repairing cracked glass, specifically windshields. The thinner glue will wick into the crack.

Check your specific area in the yellow pages for adhesives. Here in the SF Bay area is RS Hughes, with branches throughout the states.

With both use a fluorescent fixture with a black light. The bulbs can be purchased from Bulbs Direct at 800 772-5267, part number F15T8/350BL04D1 at about $ 10 each. Protect your eyes, the light will harm your eyesight, so wear appropriate goggles.

To repair the broken corner, the thinner glue would work best. Butt the two pieces together, fasten securely and apply the glue to the crack, allowing it to wick into the joint just as you would in applying acrylic glue.
