Its something we should know.

While we were hand lettering, we should have been making internet videos.

And, while we were making internet videos, we should have been hand lettering.

I noticed the rail gang is just over that hill...and pretty soon, they're gonna be here.

One Mr. Stubby Preston gave me a call, said his glue chippin' was bein' a bit stubborn,
that the glue started to chip, and then it stopped. Asked if he could bring 'em by. I said,
sure, sid down. He looked at me and said, tell me Mr. Black, how do you play this game?
I said, it's easy, as long as you keep your head, it'll always chip.

We put them panels on the light table...nothin' all day...course it was fixin' to rain, which
didn't help. So I took 'em home, put 'em in my glue chipping cabinet and fired that sucker
up. Went in at 70 degrees, 62% humidity. In a few hours it was 96 degrees and 40% humidity.
Glue chipped off over night, with just a couple stubborn spots. Told that Preston, glue chippin'
on the roof just ain't the way pard.

I like chippin' in my cabinet...works everytime don't chya know. Course it takes a bit longer than
Braggs 1 hour shower stall chip...but hey, ya can't have everything. Am I right?

As for Bob's glue chippin' problem...we've seen that a few times
over here in Machine...where the glue just peels up in a large
section leaving the sandblast without any chip pattern. I believe
that could be caused by 3 factors. 1) The glue isn't hot enough.
2) the glue is too thick (not enough water in it). or
3) The sandblasted surface is contaminated.

We've gone to rinsing the sandblasted surface with a strong
stream of water to ensure all the dust is removed from the
pits of the glass. The glass is allowed to dry prior to the glue
being applied.

Also for a good result, I like to air dry the glue to a rock hard
transparent state. Often I will wait until I start to see it peeling
up on the edge, then I put it in the chipping cabinet. I allow it
to chip entirely within this controlled environment. Chipping
outside in the sun is a little ify, as the atmospheric conditions
will change over the course of the day.

On Stubby's panels, there was a couple large areas that just
refused to chip. I took the panel out of the chipping booth
and layed some water saturated paper towels over the glue
that wasn't chipping. I left it on there for about 15 minutes.
This rehydrated the top layer of the glue. I then returned it
to the chipping cabinet, and those areas were fully chipped
by morning. This technique of rehydration was told to me
by Pat Mackle. Works pretty good.

That's enough for now... it's gettin' late!

Mr White, thanks for the input! I tried it again for the 5th time the other day with a little more water and a thinner coat of glue applied to the warm level glass.......it did the same thing..........lifted in one solid piece without chipping. Today, (6th time around) I re etched the area with an electric engraver........brushed it off and applied the glue. Its air drying now, Ill trim it up later on today. Hopefully by tomorrow morning I'll have a chip & I wont be whining about this any longer! If it doesnt chip I'm going to get another piece of glass and start over again from square one.

thanks

Is it Chaney?

I would not recognize the back of his head.

Is it our man?

I believe not.

Well, turn him around.

Why?

I might know him...

Fess up Mr. White.

That's the same guy, in the same place in the back, year after year. He'd just go back there... and spread out 2-3 pieces of glass on the easel, keep to himself, and work like it was going out of style.

What happened to that guy? He's not quite anymore!

Larry what do you think?
Should Pat not stop blasting bricks and watching his wheels turn for two decades, but now just throw those bricks out of the window and start cutting glass?
