I am not exactly what kind of gilding boxes you are referring to, but you can see a bunch of metal "sign kits" used by Steven Parrish on this page:

One of them is shown at the top. They seemed to be just ordinary toolboxes he had purchased over the years. Several companies made and make commercial "sign kits". Try http://www.letterheadsignsupply.com
