Sending files via e-mail

Post by Roderick Treece »

Recently I remmember seeing someone post a list of types of acceptable computer files to send via e-mail for sign making proposes. It could have been on somones site as well.
I am trying to give people as much info on my site as possible so they know what to e-mail me when I get ready to do their job.

Thanks for the help

Rod,

I always ask for Illustrator files with type converted to outlines, saved back to v 3 or 6 since I use Illustrator. I rarely have a problem with files that have been set up this way, and all programs can either open or import these files. EPS would be the next choice, but occasionally have issues with files from a different program. Corel users would get better results using eps.

PDF at one time was purported at being a universal file sharing format, but I would use that as a last resort, and is my least favorite. One problem in PDF is the inability to convert fonts to outlines in some programs used to generate the PDF file.

For vector outline files, I am partial to Adobe Illustrator Version 3. It works with almost all vector programs including Illustrator 3 and higher.

For photographs (bitmaps/raster) images, the best is TIF format, assuming you are talking about some sort of large format output.

For web images, most people use JPGs for photographs and GIF for some of the more simple graphic files. As mentioned earlier, web images are seldom more than 600-700 pixels wide. Most recommend images 450 pixels at the largest dimensions.

Hope this helps,
