gold size continued

Post by Doug Bernhardt »

A while back we were discussing the changes Lefranc made and the problems ppl were having. I'm now at the end of my old supply and need to order a 12hr. size. What is the consensus? How is everyone managing?

size

Post by Kent Smith »

Besides the 1Shot fast size, I am still using LeFranc. My newest liter was thinner but the results were good, 12 to 18 hour. I have been straining the size for a few years as it seems to develop some internal dry crusties once open.

Thanx so far....with the exception of Smitty here. Hey Dave...what stuff do you use over there? Am hoping for a bit more input. I've heard it said that Lefranc has fixed their problems but am very wary about them at this point.

I'm as much in the dark as you are with this one Doug. I have a couple of tins of the original which I use for glass. I will phone Alan Brindle the goldman of Manchester ,he pretty much gilds everything that moves over here, if anyone will know he will. Give me a few days there mate.

I spoke with Handover Brushed today about the Lefranc changes . It appears as we all know Lefranc took the lead out and it caused major problems to the product. Mike at Handover gave me a number for a company called Robersons who are the main supplier for lefranc in this country. They said it is now free of any problems and are receiving very good feed back from gilders in this country. On the other hand I spoke with Alan Brindle briefly today .He has tested the new product and was not happy with the results, he can explain more to you Doug and would like for you to phone him so he can tell you what he knows. He recommends Robersons 24 hr goldsize very highly. It would be a worth a call when you can Doug. I will forward his Telephone number to you. Maybe then you will know more info for the folk here also.

To continue from here....I spoke with Alan and he was very helpful. He does alot of gold work and is impressed by a 24hr. size from Roberson. I have never heard of them over here. He also mentioned that the problem with the new Lefranc is when you are working dimensional things that the size pools at the bottom rather than staying put. I have no experience with the "new Lefranc" and welcome any others thoughts on this. Also after a brief conversation about this with Canadian Signcrafters (my supplier for almost everything) they stated that Lefranc and Sepp Leaf worked together on this for quite awhile. It is apparently impossible now to ship anything into North America if it contains lead. It seems the only thing left that has lead in it are childrens toys being shipped in from China but that's another subject....so onward and forward

From Kelly - The Expert Signpainter

Post by Kelly Thorson »

Here you go Doug....from Kelly - The Expert Signpainter...the book, not me. :P

Fat Oil Size Formula
Boil some pure raw linseed oil and place it in a wide-mouthed bottle and hang it in a sunny window, where no dirt can get into it. It will require some weeks to become fit for use, but it will be the best possible.

To get an over-night size, add to clear fat oil size one-tenth it's bulk of turpentine driers of the best kind.
For a forty-eight-hour oil size add one-twentieth of it's bulk of best turpentine japan driers.
Thin the above sizes with gasoline, to make it flow easily.

To fat oil, one part, add two parts of gold size japan, with chrome yellow enough to give it the desired gold colour.

A slow drying oil size may be made from two parts fat oil and one part finishing varnish, adding also a few drops of japan gold size. Add ochre or yellow as desired.

A quicker size than the preceeding one may be made by using a medium quick drying varnish and just a little fat oil, and rather more japan than called for in the other formula.

Mix equal parts of freshly boiled oil and coach japan, and colour with chrome yellow, then add an equal amount of the whole of fat oil. This makes a slow size, one that will do to gild on the next day, or a day or so after that. ... You can hasten or retard the drying by varying the proportions given; the more fat oil the slower the size.

There are more size formulas in that book if you have it. I'm curious about the results from anyone who has tried this. I think it would be fun to try and it seems like old work for the most part has held up pretty well.
I believe there is no shame in failure. Rather, the shame lies in the loss of all the things that might have been, but for the fear of failure.

Thanx Me-Lady. I have it copied into ever growing folder of info. Many years back (don't ask how many) I remember one of the people I worked for, mixing his own size. He was using 1shot with a boat varnish and linseed oil. It was pretty inconsistent as I used the same thing before meeting all these fine folks to find this was all old hat.
