Lettering Quills

Post by Larry White »

For years I have enjoyed using Liquitex brand grey squirrel quills. I used to buy them from Rick. Unfortunately, they quit making them. It's almost time to buy some new ones. I was wondering what brands of quills other people like to use and which suppliers they buy them from. Thanks.

Larry me old fruit cake.
Try the quills from Handover Brushes London. Rick started to sell them after inviting the owner Mike Venus over in 97.
Gregg Hegar swears by them,. They have a nice fluid feel to them and leave a crisp sharp corner to your letters. I've used them for my work for the last 24 years.
Lovely brushes.........

got me some Handovers and some Wrights of Lymm.

sure wish that English soldier would be a bit more specific as to which series he prefers.

I know we're not asking for a Christmas pudding recipe, just a number.

Sorry you filthy animals.
series to go for would be either 2116 pure sable quills or 2114 chisel mixture sable and ox quills.
Get both there brilliant!
Aho!

Dave,

I see ducks and geese and what not listed there under 2116 red sables. No pics or sizes listed. Do I need to
give them a call for translation or could you fill me in as to what the names are equivelant to.
I also see some long hair squirrel quills that look like they would come in very handy. Have you tried them out?

Thanks.

Don't quote me but I think...
ferrule to quill sizes translate as
0- lark
1 -crow
2 small duck-(or large crow)
3-Duck
4-Large Duck
5- Small goose
6-Goose
7- Large Goose
8-Extra small swan
9-Small Swan
10-Swan
11-Large Swan
12 -Condor.

Wayne, does that mean my 000's are budgie size? I have one on my shoulder now, sure glad he cannot read.

I always preferred Raphael and French Masters originals...still have a lifetime supply of both. Having said that, Mack makes some very nice quills.

 Step away from the Budgie!

- Not sure about the small sizes- I'm guessing there's a small lark-(and even maybe Budgie), but I've never seen one labeled as such
