In the early years of wall dogging, the traveling painters usually traveled by train, wagon, or whatever. They didn't bother too much with paper patterns. They simply used a length of string or cord with knots and loops to indicate the guide lines and measurements for the particular wall signs they were painting in the different towns.
The tiny balls of string or cord were much easier to carry than large paper patterns.
