Rick Glawson's Denver Brewery Tray

Danny Baronian sent these two images. The glass piece was a panel Rick Glawson did a long time ago. I believe he brought it to a couple of Letterhead meetings and a few people surely got to see it in person.

Others might have the more detailed steps, but I am pretty sure it went like this:
  • 1: Make a screen which exposes protects the black lines.
2: Screen an acid resist on the glass which exposes clear glass.
3: Apply the acid, which eats into the exposed glass.
4: Clean off acid and the resist.
5: Paint the glass with black paint.
6: Carefully, using a razor blade, scrape off all the black, leaving black in the etched depressions.
7: Using a water gild, apply gold over most of the factory or designs.
8: Using a q-tip, carefully remove areas of the water gilded gold, such as in the windows.
    9. Water gild over the windows with white gold or paladium.
10: Back up the necessary gilded/silver areas.
As one extra option, prior to backing up, you can go in with a sharp pointed "pen" or needle and scratch fine cross-hatched lines into the gold/silver. This can imitated extra shadows in the buildings. Then back up with black and the scratches will show through.

Rick used this original piece to create the original line art.

Here are two more.

While the tray was a work or art, Rick would frequently show it off by tossing his keys on it to show it's durability. Not something most of us would do, but it was something Rick made to show off and use. It usual spot was on the front counter by the register.

Here's a close up of the factory.

The tray was something Rick wanted to do for a while, but set a deadline for himself to take it to the International meet in Boise for the Letterheads 25th annivesary.

The original art posted by Mike was an advertising card produced for the Denver Brewery, which was approximately 3 x 5 inches. Rick spent about 3-4 months in his spare time to produce the tray.

The edge had a slight bevel which was flat polished. The indentations around the border were brilliant carved, and the back outer border angel gilded.

After Ricks passing, the estate sold the tray to David Smith of England. On a trip to Wilmington, I picked the tray up for David, photographed it, and - reluctantly sent it off.

Nice clear photos. In '95, I gave Rick directions to the old brewery and he took plenty of photos. The Building on the left is still standing and is a restaurant/bar today, just off I25. Never been in, just driven by many times. At least the tray has a good home.

Are there any galleries on the web where you can see more glass and/or mirror art like this? Thanks.

After a quick glance at both websites, I realized when I grow up,
I want a website like the Jacksons!
and he took that golden hair and made a sweater for baby bear.
