This project is a xmas present for a client so I kept it aside and worked on it when I could. If finally slowed down enough this week to finish it.
The client found a Dean Hensley piece on line that wasn't for sale so that's where the inspiration comes for. I talked to Dean's brother Tom , hoping they might have old art work or screens to buy but no such luck.

Well Rod, that is a great looking finished piece. I hope that the shipper takes great care of it and that it arrives in once piece.

I do feel obligated to point out the fact that I don't think the project was a successful one though - it looks nothing like the original art work you posted.

Well the original one was for Red Fox but he backed out. So after drinking a sixer of Colt 45 some how the art got changed. Sorry to disapoint you.
Everything I ship gets packed with 2 1/2" of ridged foam all the way around it ( minimum standard is 2") and then gos into a wooden crate. If it's large enough the crate go's on a pallet. It's always over insured. I also have a photo file of pictures of a crate being packed showing each step so if I do have a breakage I have documentation of the process. That's VERY IMPORTANT if you ever have a breakage and claim. Of about two hundred or so pieces so far only one has broken.

Rod,
I'm sure you know that glass ships best on edge.
I ship mine large glass in a crate and on edge- with strong wooden feet that defy removal. And I attach "tip indicators" inside the crate AND clearly mark it with signs telling the shippers of the enclosed tip indicators and not to lay the crate flat (as they will surely set something heavy onto it.)
I have shipped several large crates of etched glass to France. All arrived 100% fine except for one crate they ripped the feet from.
They laid it flat on the dock and a fork lift operator stacked a one ton cast glass display base onto it.
I guess my packing method was actually pretty good, as the etched mirror inside broke into only two pieces.

Pat,
Is it fully enclosed in a box or an up side down T shape ? Do you have a photo ? I am going to do a cost comparision of the 2 shapes to see what the deference is.

Rod,

Your crate already looks like a piece of art.
Can't wait for the photo's of Pat his solution, with base and all the client can put it in a gallery without unpacking...
Realizing we are in the 2nd renaissance of the arts.
Learn, copy and trying to improve...
Still in the learning phase ;-)

I checked with Fedex Freight. Shipping go's be class. glass mirrors are class 125 which are not a deminsional weight so it is the same price for a 52' wide x 122' long x 6" tall or 52 x 52 x 122 .
