Spyware

Post by Danny Baronian »

Using firefox looking for supplies today on a pc, a warning came up saying there were 9 instances of a virus, along with a dialogue box saying click OK to download and install virusdocotor .exe.

I logged out of the browser, logged back in and searched for virusdocotor.exe, it is malware / spyware.

Several posts recommended the following:

Download And Install Malwarebytes And SuperAntiSpyware.
http://www.filehippo.com/download/file/c

http://filehippo.com/download/file/a5fb5

Update Then Run Full System Scans.

I haven't done it yet, and will check it further. Supposedly as long as you do not run the .exe file and you're running a virus program it should be fine. Click ok and it will install malware. I have a virus program that performs regular checks, but when this came up, it's easy to think it's the virus program you have running.

Anyone receive this message in your browser from virusdocotor online?

Hi Danny,
I haven't had that on my system, but Darla has had it a couple of times on her machine. Some of them look really legit and have some of the Windows style security manager screens, but you don't want to click the OKAY button to install the bogus fix.

While the focus of this forum is on "signmaking", it also extends to any advice that helps keep our signmaking systems working. I'd say it also includes systems for backing up data, encryption software, virus protection and related products.

The links I posted above are no longer active, sorry I should have checked first.

Do a search for spyware in the browser of your choice, many list the software as free, but it's usually free for only 30 days. If anyone has a suggestion as to a good spyware utility, post it.

I just ran a scan and it found nothing.

Like Mike said, the warnings look like your regular screen and appear legit, their not. Read them and don't download any .exe files unless you are absolutely sure what they are. Hitting OK in the instance of said spyware, it installs it on your computer.

Roderick's on a mac, so he's good to go. Other than giving me a bad time :-)

Malware Bytes is an A+ affair. If you ever get zapped by some
malware you would do well to have this progam on a flash drive
as you may not be able to log on. I also use Suprer Anti Spyware,
with very good results I think. Here is another one I just latched
onto. You can use their free lighter version or upgrade to the
professional version: http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html
Lots of horror stories out their with getting hit with malware.

I have not gotten it but Audri had it on her laptop, her 10 year old cliked the OK without knowing. We had to have it wiped by techs. Really nasty and it self-replicates under many names rapidly. At least data was backed up.
