Where sould I field test experimental gild?
I would like to field test an experimental surface gild. I've been testing it here in Northwest Connecticut (which has some pretty sever weather) for a year....so far so good. I would like to test it in other regions under different conditions.
If you are so inclined, have a unique enviornment and are willing to help out, Please email me at jcieslowski@snet.net and I will ship you a sample (about 7 1/2"x11" wall hung or post).
Many Thanks in Advance!
Joe

Hi Joe,
You've been quiet lately. Glad to see you didn't give up on us!
I'm game. Send me one and I will test it here in the northern Rockies at 6300 ft. elevation.

Test
Joe - down here in Texas we don't get much snow but we do have heat in abundance. Well, most of the time. Last week it was in the 90's and this morning it is 35 - just typical weather for our part of the country.
We don't have a lot of humidity like they do along the coast, but it is not desert either.
Send me one and we'll see what happens to it.
Like Mike said, it's good to see you back.

Update.....
First, let me say Thanks!
These are the test areas so far....
Mike in Jackson WY, Danny near San Francisco, Pierre in Quebec and Dave near Dalas TX. Ray, are your conditions much different than Dalas?
I'd like to make 6 samples.
Any ideas of other areas?
Thanks again,
Joe

Different than Dallas?
Are we different than Dallas? Of course. Down south here in Temple, Dallas residents are considered Yankees.
But the weather is not much different. We are about 120 miles south, so it may be a little cooler in the winter, but not much.

Well, it's been three years......
Mike and Danny (Dave is just getting to it in TX) have had these samples for three years.......how is the gild holding up?
The urethan finish should be showing signs of wear.......if it hasn't failed.
Please, what is the status of the samples?
A big Thank You from CT,
Joe,

Joe,
I wrote on my panel before putting it out on Aug. 23, 2005. It sat on my desk for a month or two before I mounted it on a south facing wall with full sun and exposure.
After almost three years, it is starting to fail with some varnish peeling back on the coves. The pores of the wood are showing through on the incised/gilded border and a couple of places in the numbers. The colors are slightly less vivid. The filigree ornament looks brand new. Overall, however, it has outlasted anything we ever did with clear varnishes.
I probably have your address somewhere, but let me know and I will send the panel back to you.
Thanks for letting me do the experiment with you.

Thanks a lot Mike,
That would be great if you could send it back to me......maybe I can clean it up and re-coat it and send it back to you and see what happens.
I also have a control piece in my shop so I can check for fading.
Send it to: Joe Cieslowski
P.O. Box 368
E. Canaan, CT 06024
Send it Priority Mail and I'll reimburse you.
Thanks Again!
