Gold Leaf source of supply...

Post by Larry White »

This just came in over the wire...

L.A. Gold Leaf
Looks to be maybe Chinese gold as the leaf size is 3-1/8" square.
They sell by the book, or a pack of 4 books, or the standard pack of 20 books.

Never know when ya might need some gold leaf...perhaps in the foreseeable future.
But I don't know....

This is definatly asian, I recognize the photo's from ebay.
I never tried it, but heard other people who did and they said it was no good.
To many wholes, the leave is made for cruedly carved wood or donating to budha by sticking the leaves quickly on a statue.

LA gold leaf is close to my area and I have bought from them when in a rush, rather than drive the LA traffic.
They are nice people to deal with.
As far as the quality of the gold products, I have not been extremely critical on scrutinizing the leaves for holes.
I have some unique ways that I have discovered to apply gold leaf that don't seem to be affected by using their product.
Any differences are not readily noticeable.
In my head I like to buy from more traditional makers, and I do. But on occasion if I need it very quick, or the pricing
has a great sense of competition, I choose on the side of discounts.
Pat
PS: One thing that will impress you is how well packaged LA's gold is. Each book come placed between two pieces of
gold foiled heavy gauge matt board and wrapped together with rubber bands. It's over the top.

Erik,
The thought just came to me that just like many products, there could be varying degrees of imported gold.
Any second quality or split leaves could be passed on to less critical markets such as ceramic pottery, picture frames, tree offerings and such.

This is the kind of leaf I see over here in Japan. They do use it for the shrines and religious stuff, Erik. There is a wide variation in quality, of course. I get mine in loose form from an art supplier, Enoguya Sankichi in Kanagawa, and it is usable. They don't usually have books of leaf over here.

These photos are the kind of old beat up packages I see on the Yahoo auctions over here. Someone has been selling a lot of them with NO guarantee saying it was from a closed down shop or something. I have been too scared to try it.

I do not know if that is where LA gets this stuff but it looks exactly the same.

Not exactly bargain prices, especially given questionable quality issues many have had, particularly for glass work.

We had a visit to this years Conclave by Jim Harris , President of Golden leaf Products. Jim was generuos enough to give everyone that wanted it enough 23k gold to gild there project. The gold was top notch and even the pickyiest in the group thougt it was good for what we were doing.

Thanks again to Jim and good luck to you !

Thanks for the Golden Leaf supplier Roderick. I'm wonder if you
or anybody might have a clue on how this technique I saw on
the site was done. Thanks for the help.

Mark, this is Jim Harris of Golden Leaf Products. I just spoke with Roderick and he mentioned that you had copied and pasted part of our web page: http://www.goldenleafproducts.com on the forum with a question asking about what process was being used. Not sure if you are asking about our manufacturing process to make the Gold Leaf or if it is about a specific item on our web page. Please advise additional information and I will respond. You can also call me at 360 980 1855 or email me at jim.harris@goldenleafproducts.com

Thanks,

Jim

PS: I attended the Conclave 25 and had a ball. Hard to believe how talented this group is and what they can create and do. The guys were great, and hopefully, in the next 2 weeks, I will finish my piece of Art.
