Painting Stainless Steel

Post by erik winkler »

Hello,

I have to paint stainless steel in a mat black paint.
Are there any preparations a need to do to the stainless steel?
I can just imagine the steel will notadhere to the paint or something.

Thanks,
Erik

Stainless steel shouldn't need any different prep than any other kind of metal. It will need to be sanded or roughed up so that there is enough "tooth" for the paint to stick. Paint will not stick well to a polished surface. You didn't say what kind of thing you are painting, but whenever possible I like to sandblast the surface and paint directly on that (no primer) as the paint will grip much better on that texture. Works great...even on aluminum.

I'd probably frost it with a fine sandblast grit before painting.

We call those banner holders Erik. :P

Even if you do sandblast, the oxide layer starts to reform even after a few minutes, the acid in etch primer penetrates that layer, however your best bet for stainless steel is a red oxide primer as regular etching primers are not strong enough to etch stainless steel. Krylon makes one that is recommended for stainless steel.
I believe there is no shame in failure. Rather, the shame lies in the loss of all the things that might have been, but for the fear of failure.
