I share with you this most interesting internetpage about restaurating the biggest gilded statue in Berlin.
English translation by google from German.
Look at the video on the right, eventhough it is in German the pictures are very nice.

Re: Gilding a statue in Berlin
nice post Erik, very interesting.
I'd like to see a photo of the entire stature.
It's amusing to read their problems with wind blowing away the gold leaf....I had the same problem the last couple of weeks. I just finished a restoration job on a historic mansion, gilding column details outside. Some of the areas are complex shapes and have to use plain leaf so that I can fully gild it. Of course, not being able to use transfer leaf on these sections, the slightest bit of wind is a problem and would blow the leaf away. You just can't always use an effective guard. Very frustrating.

The translation by google made a mistake it is not 200 square foot, but 200 square meters!
That is 2152 square foot!
6 books for one square meter, that would make 12.900 books op 24 crt patent gold.
Times 30 euro makes 387.000 euro's or 489.980 dollars just in gold leaf..... auch!
