Old Gold and Glass

Post by Bill DeBekker »

Doing some Glass work in the mountains for a Museum and came across these in their back rooms.
Thought you all might like seeing them.
Looks like some Acid Etching on the Dubuque Sign and Does.
Does anyone know how they did the foil work on the Reliance Sign. Initial Look it it looked chipped but once I got closer I could tell its wasn't.. And Couldn't disassemble it all the way to look.. I did see a Show card Panel from the back so I am wondering if they applied the "Wrinkled" Silver or Tin foil to that, then use that as a backup for the effect. There is also a lot of pearl used in this.. "This one will be reproduced in the shop soon."

I had to link them as the BB won't allow me to post larger photos and I wanted to preserve the detail.

Nice Find! Do you get to keep them? I suspect not...but had to ask.

Oh yeah, that Reliance is really nice.

A great example of crushed tin foil backing...if that's what it is.

Can you imagine what these would go for on the open market?!

Nice...thanks for posting...

The crushed tin foil thing was often used as a backing for folk art paintings on glass. it's usually not attached to the glass. It's just loose and sits in the frame behind the work.

For that matter, you might see silk cloth or butterfly wings used the same way.

Back in the day when these older works were done, did they screen the lettering or was it hand done? Just curious as I'm new to this but really admire the work and assume much of the work done today is screened. Thanks.
