Lincoln Highway mural number 23 - New Lenox, IL

Post by Jay Allen »

Number 23 is about to be installed in New Lenox, IL

This one tells the story of trolley cars . . . and their eventual demise due to the popularity and speed of automobiles . . .

The photo they supplied showed the trolley car and another vehicle much farther back in the photo . . . we cropped in a different car that was taken at a car show - so the detail was amazing to paint with (but took a lot longer as a result!!) Sadly, the car lacked a driver - so I had to put one in . . . which was easier than I feared.

We also cropped the trolley car and pulled it forward until it was just about to go under the bridge. The text that was written to support the images was very well done by the project coordinator - and to me is as important as anything else.

55 hours to paint the entire pictorial . . . but guess what? Almost 30 of that was on the car alone . . .

As always, mural panel engineering and border work by the stellar Joe Marshall . . . my design and paint.

The design we presented is the first slide . . .

Number 24 is for the town of Batavia, IL . . . Project ends March 31, 2013 - 33 murals in all.

Jay, as always a great job :!: Appreciate your sharing your project journey. I'm curious to know if there is any type of 'protective' coating applied to aid in the removal 'spray can' artwork should it happen?

Thanks, Ron . . . thanks, Erik . . .

Ron, Steve Berman (used to be with Chromatic) developed the most universally acceptable clear for the varied paints and methods with the CSX5000 clear he developed with Clearstar (now Marabu North America). We roll it on a 10' x 20' mural (5 Dibond panels) in less than 30 minutes - one man pours fresh in the roller tray - one guy rolls it with a mohair fine nap roller on a long paint handle. Slight orange peel as it dries so rapidly (thick means better protection to me) - but no toxicity whatsoever and a beautiful satin finish . . . or any gloss level with their other sheens. Dead dry in less than 2 hours and no odor to choke you out.

Water cleanup - you can reuse the rollers - easy-peasy. $85.00-ish for a gallon - we can 3 10' x 20' murals out of one gallon - and still have some left over with a second gallon if the batch number is the same - so 1,400 square feet per 2 gallons . . .

We highly recommend it as it is still performing well outdoors on these murals and while it has only been 2 years and 5 months since the first one went up, we have seen NO sign of failure anywhere.

Here's the PDF for the product:
