Thanks for this video clip, Bill. It's always great to see the inexhaustible kinds of expression that can come through typography - especially hand lettered words. The artist, Leandro Senna, definitely had fun with this project and is clearly talented. It's refreshing to see no sterile computer fonts used!

But leave it to me to comment further.

I'm a huge fan of both Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix, and as much as Hendrix's haunting guitar in "All Along the Watchtower" sends chills down my spine, I think Dylan's version is superior, simply because his barren understated rendition supports the song as a mysterious ballad which leaves you hanging.

Similarly, I prefer Dylan's naive home made cards in his 1965 video of Subterranean Homesick Blues to the whimsical hand lettering in Leandro's creative video clip. Just seems like it fits the raw, rebellious throw-away nature of the song. And isn't that part of what we try to do as sign-artists: interpret the subject matter through our letter forms?

OK, so call me a party-pooper! I can take it.

I much prefer Dylan's original too. The thing I like about Leandro's video is that he put forth effort into each of the cards. I think I read somewhere that Bob only drew 6 of the cards in the original video. Of course it's obvious that the original's focus wasn't on hand lettering or creative sign writing.

Well, I ain't askin' again.

Bill,
Right you are about Leandro's work and I felt kind of like a hypocrite to criticize it. I mean I actually like the lettering he did and - do I have something better to show? And just as Dylan's cards (drawn by him, Donovan, Allen Ginsberg & I think someone else) weren't supposed to be about creative hand lettering, so Leandro's video is more about being creative with word-forms and not necessarily enhancing the song.
But I still like the original better. I stand by my party-pooping.
