a different boston gild.......

Post by vance galliher »

.....now that i have your attention ...... sorry no pics yet, it's something i want to do. i was commissioned to do a boston style gild on a storefront window. but rather than gold, the client want a silver metal look. I’m thinking of palladium matte center , perhaps textured (?), with a white 12k bright line. Is palladium the best choice?

I might be inclined to do it the other way around, with the
paladium as the brightline, and the 12K as the matte center.

...but I don't know....

I thought that LeBlanc described the Boston Gild as a 2 tone effect from one leaf, using varnish to get a matte when watergilded over. As I've never watergilded with palladium I would stick with 12k.
Vance, were you looking at matte centers, or high lights, or bevels, or something else???
where am i? Now, when i need me...

lee, i said this was a "different" boston gild...hahaa. i have done this with the same leaf as well as with different karats, but the clients wants a clean simple "silver" look. the upscale restaurant name has to be on a large glass window, but just palladium would be boring, so i want to make it two tone for added drama. i'll do some test using 12k/palladium in different ways (matte/bright...bright/matte..etc) to see what works best. i was wondering if others had the same issue before and could share some insight .......just looking for the "wow" factor

Boston is indeed single gild with one leaf color over "dry" clear with the paint outlines in place. Palladium is too brittle to bridge both the clear center for the matte and the paint outline without having many holidays. Double gild by dong the matte onto clear size with the burnish outlines in pllace, works ok with palladium. White gold will sometimes get serious tarnish lines over varnish as time passes. My preference is to do burnished outlines with white gold first, then clear size and gild the centers with aluminum which gives a nice matte. Care should be taken to not wrinkle the aluminum as they will show through. You can extend the clear size over the backing paint for the burnish outlines which will toughen it up. This works particularly well with larger lettes too.
