John Stevens Calligraphy brushes and paint

Post by Jeff Kuchem »

I just finished watching a John Stevens calligraphy video and was wondering if someone might recognize the type of brush he is using and also what type of ink/paint is best. I find myself straying from the traditional Luco brush to using more of a stiff latex brush on some of my "rougher" projects.( I resently finished lettering about 20 fiberglass gravestones and an antique church bench) If you haven't seen John's website it is inspiring to anyone who loves our art. johnstevensdesign.com

Quote from John Stevens:
The brush: Windsor & Newton 995 | 1/2 inch (1.27cm).
Many broad edge brushes will work, but this offers a great combination of "hair memory" and control.
Longer hair brushes will give a bit more control, but do not snap back into a broad edge as quickly. Of course it is all personal preference, but that is my advice to beginners.

The pigment is either black gouache or RichArt Tempra (Poster color #24)
Realizing we are in the 2nd renaissance of the arts.
Learn, copy and trying to improve...
Still in the learning phase ;-)
