California Conclave 2014!

Post by Larry White »

The California Conclave wrapped up another successful meeting! Started back in 1985 by the late
Rick Glawson, it continues on with many of the old hands, and some new ones to carry on the craft,
hosted by Dean Ross out in Bakersfield, California. It was the 29th annual meeting! ...Which means
next year will be the big Three-O! This year we did a very nice piece derived from an old orange crate
label, titled, "Cal-Oro" vectored by Glenn Duncan, and skillfully screen printed by one Mr. John Studden
and his team. Hopefully some of the finished Cal-Oro pieces will be posted here. A couple of secondary
projects also showed up, one being a pre-printed turn-of-the-century lithograph of a fancy popcorn
wagon, and this one designed by myself and ready for the participants to work on, if they chose.

Image

I kept this one really simple, employing a black screen print, then gilding the background in Moon
gold, with the seldom used, but not forgotten, "beer size" trick, which is the same as water gilding,
but yields a matte finish to the gold. I also did a second one that I'm going to make a little fancier.
I also did the popcorn wagon, which I finished while I was there. It was really fun, kind of a
"paint-by-numbers" without any numbers! Everyone had a great time!

Thanks Dean, Glenn, Mr. Dickinson. and all that participated!

Many thanks Larry for posting all these great pieces of art. Thanks to Dean Ross for continuing to host these meets and all those who participate.
I always wait impatiently, with baited breath, to see the masterpieces created on that weekend and see photos of all those smiling faces we missed. Larry, you are always one who posts photos of this wonderful event and for that I am so thankful.....(Hint hint....I wish a few more would share their Conclave experiences and post their pictures here as well) Beautiful work, by the way!!! Keep those photos coming.....they are appreciated

Broke my arm a few days before the Conclave was set to start, but despite the handicap I was more than happy I went. Big thanks to Dean for hosting and Also to Larry and Glenn for the artwork as well as to John for the expert pulls on the screen. Got a chance to photograph my piece today and got so excited I decided to start another one on late on Saturday night.

Nice job on the Cal-Conclave piece, Rich.

I've been working on the Cal-Oro piece at a steady pace...'cause there's no reason to hurry....

Thanks again to Larry White & Glen Duncan for putting the artwork together, and thanks to all who pulled and cleaned the screens. Many Brain cells lost in such a fine art.

See you next year pals!

Finally finished the project the other day and took about an hour to get a halfway decent photo of the piece. 23 Karat brightline gild with 18 Karat centers, one shot paints, mother of pearl, abalone, glitter and aluminum all in this one.

Nice job one and all...

Looks like a marvelous time was had by all that could make it. Maybe one of these years I'll make it to one.
Sure I paint thing for my amusement and then offer them for sale. A brushslinger could whither en die from lack of creativity in this plastic town my horse threw a shoe in.

Finally got around to finishing the Cal-Oro butterfly. It took me a while because I became absorbed in finishing this dragon which was in flight during the Conclave. So, here is a picture of the dragon; carved and gilded kanji (Power and Chaos), Demar varnish with screen ink coloring and backed with gold, then painted. I have yet to put the shell on the backbone as I like to do that after I have it in a frame so it shows black in the picture from the background behind the glass.

Here are two Cal-Oro butterfly pieces I started at the Conclave. The first one has dots of clear epoxy resin which has been water gilded. And, there is a highlight drop shadow on the bottom text (2nd picture). The glass is standard soda-lime glass and it is painted with one-shot and bronze powder.

The second Cal-Oro butterfly is made of Starphire glass and painted with translucent screen inks and various colors of mica powder. I removed the screened lower text and redid it in gold and then added a double drop shadow in the text which is very hard to see in the photo. The Starphire glass does make a difference in the clarity of the colors IMO.

I have yet to put the shell into the ovals of the butterfly as I will do that after I frame them.
