HINT: Squint Test
One simple way to check the effectiveness of your layout is to do a simple drawing (by hand or computer) and then squint. This throws everything out of focus and you see only shapes of dark and light. Since the details are eliminated, only the value blocks of greatest contrast are seen. If the priority copy isn't readable when you squint....it's back to the drawing board.

A couple of other ways we were told in school:
Look at your design in a mirror.
Hold the design upside down.

These are ways to see what attracts you eye first.
