I received about 18 sheets of shell from them yesterday and I Love it so far...
The colors are absolutely beautiful...BUT

The finish that has been put on these are an epoxy surface coat that would be placed against the glass. How do y'all think it might hold with frog or epoxy against the back of the glass?

Most of the shell they sell have both a combination of kandies and backup on the back and front. There are some with kandies with black or white backup and then they have kandied the surface with back up on the back.

What are your thoughts on this before I begin playing?

Thanks

Robert
Larry White - Order the shell as "Raw Veneer"
I too placed an order with Aqua Blue Maui. The shell sheets are available as "Thin Laminates" which have the clear face finish and typically some color backup on the back, or they are available in their raw form as the shell with no coatings. They are also cheaper in their raw form (about 30% less). If I need to execute a technique over the back of shell that I've laid, I always surface gild it with some silver composition leaf for maximum lustre. I usually always back it up this way.

Hi Robert,
Am willing to bet that the finish is just fine. The raw shell is porous and so any finish that was factory applied id likely to be good. Epoxies are stable and if this stuff is used in guitar making...well it,s gotta put up with what we do!
Doug again - Quick P.S.
One of the things John Studdley does is to spray a quick coat of laquer over the pearl before applying to the glass. Gives a nice sheen so again am sure the factory finish is fine!

Thanks Doug

I did get my product in and have been really pleased with both the service and colors...It helps with my design ideas to have some shell that has already been colored...helps me with my learing curve!...I am working on placing the sheets down as a sample board, taking 1" squares and placing them onto glass for display.

I am going to try something that was a major concern when pacer glue was no longer available...and Rick suggested using the frog juice over the surface and then placing a little super glue gel to push the shell down to the glass to get rid of bubbling. I will be testing this tonight!

Thanks again for the help!
