Bruce Jackson's photo archive - 3 - E.S.Wilson_signwriter

Post by BruceJackson »

Melbourne had a major international exhibition in the 1888 to show off the relatively new city to the world. We built an exhibition building especially for it that still stands and is possibly the most significant historic building in city. Here's the sign that was judged the finest example of the sign trade at the exhibition.

---------
My notes:

E. S. Wilson - Sign writer and Gilder on glass
Artist attributed: J. R. Sommer
In custody of the Master Painters of Australia, 399 Camberwell Rd, Camberwell, Victoria.

Exhibition advertising display panel. Contains at least three gold colours - regular, white and lemon. Extensive use of gold engraving, colour glazing backed with leaf and blended painting techniques.

Plaque on the frame reads: "Centre piece of display receiving highest award and only medal for decoration. Centennial international Exhibition Melbourne 1888-9, Artist: J.R.Sommer"

art is very subjective.

that piece, to me, is one of the finest examples of the various gilding techniques,
excellent combination of engraving and traditional gilding
(is your term for engraving similar to verre' eglomise?)

very beautiful work

thanks for sharing

I'm really enjoying your archives Bruce. Thanks!
I believe there is no shame in failure. Rather, the shame lies in the loss of all the things that might have been, but for the fear of failure.

Thanks for sharing this incredible example of craftsmanship with us. It is hard enough to order the processes and techniques of this piece, let alone to actually produce it. The engraving is mind blowing
Thanks

Thanks for the comments. I'm glad people are enjoying these photos....I'm starting with my favourite ones, but there is still a lot more to come.

Erik, (and anyone else who wants them), I have posted the original photos on my website for you to access. The files are a couple of Mb each, but it includes some additional shots that aren't shown here.

Tony, the terminology is a difficult one, because most people don't know the meaning of "verre églomisé". I use it to describe the otherwise clumsy description of "reverse painting and gilding on glass", which includes "gold engraving under glass", but isn't limited to engraved work. Verre églomisé is a term which isn't universally accepted but there hasn't been any other neat precise word to describe our type of art using gold leaf under glass. Perhaps we should have a discussion about it. It may help us work out how best to promote the art.

Beautiful workmanship, Mr Wilson put some time into this panel. I would imagine he was kept very busy producing work like this.
Thanks Bruce.

Nice stuff there Bruce.
If it wasn't for the fact you posted the link I would never have guessed goldreverre was you.

That's a brilliant site you have to show off your work.
