Old Sign Shop

I had these photos sent me of old sign shop in Bideford ,North Devon , looks like they kept the signs in place and converted the shop back to a house. The first 3 photos are not great as he only uses a throw away camera.

Also some other glass signs and Cadbury's Chocolate display that a friend owns.

I particularly like the Gilder, Embosser et al, especially the shades although direction is interesting. The color choices are unique. Used to be some store front sign shops like that in Denver until the 1960's.

Yes Dave, thanks for posting these pics.

In the cadbury chocolate picture it appears to be a white gold, chipped?, with
a yellow gold bright outline. I really like that look. I don't recall seeing that type
of gilding done before and it's giving me an idea here to try and incorporate it
into a future piece.

Is there any pics here or around with this technique, or have you or anyone done this?
I really think it would look great.

I magnified the photo and it looks like it might even be mother of pearl in the centers.
Wonder what the pricing difference would have been back in that period between gilded, chipped and gilded, or mother of pearl treatments
in letter centers.
It probably took a lot more labor to make MOP chips back then than it did to make gold leaf wouldn't you agree?

Pat is right the centre is pearl with crushed pearl and flitter around it as a fill in.

What has been done is silvering on gluechipping with an bright 23k outline.
In my opinion it is stricking, but not stricking enough, for the work you do.
Both shinny, needs a black outline I between.
Or shinny silvering inside and matt gold outside.
But that is just my opninion and tip not to make the same esthetique mistake as I did.

I did a similiar style letter on an Atkinson replica (Neptune Water) some time back, but I airbrushed a transparent green glaze over the chipped center...



I think, even without the glaze, it's a nice two-tone effect.
