Hey, you're gettin' pretty good at those!

Very nice! Is this one that is executed on a stock mirror, or did you mirror it yourself?

Anytime someone want a new mirror look with lots of open clean mirroring I use stock mirror. That way I know it's going to be as perfect as it can be.

If you use a new mirror and want to oil gild simply mask and sandblast. Doesn't really matter what mask you use. Normally I use a spray mask for that.

Which brand of black paint is best for painting a design (including Chinese calligraphy) on window glass? The finished piece (14" by 56") will be indoors, protected under glass.

Lots to look at here, so I'll add a recent piece of work too. It's not a sign, but the techniques are the same.

This is a mirror for a Japanese restaurant. The woman is done in a variety of different colors of gold leaf, borrowing a composition and some design elements from Gustav Klimt. The woman face, vaguely disturbing and alien, is derived from a Japanese theatre mask. Airbrushing was done first, then the all the gilding.
Image

And a close up after airbrush work was finished, with a piece of card behind it just so you can see it more clearly.

I painted these two panels on clear glass in One-Shot
black enamel. (I have Roderick to thank for telling me what paint to
use.) They are for the lights (windows) on either side of a friend's
front door. Each glass panel is 14" by 56".

The Chinese character on the left panel is TAO, the Way. The character
on the right hand panel is TE, behaviour.

An ancient Chinese text on spiritual philosophy is called TAO TE
CHING, The classic book of the Way and how to live by it. My friend
and I study this book, and thought this would make a nice welcome for
visitors to Clive's house.

The small characters halfway up the right hand panel are LAO CHUANG,
Old John, my Chinese brush-name.

My work does not compare with what you folk do, but the novelty of
Chinese characters on glass may amuse Hand Lettering Forum members.

John, 你的玻璃的画很好 我也爱书法
我学中文学过三年半 虽然会看得懂 但是还是不流利

I love Chinese calligraphy too. It's such an amazing and interesting form of writing.

This mirror says "sui yuan zhuan nian", which describes the type of thinking prevalent in Buddhist thought...the concept of allowing your thoughts to change and follow a cause or reason....as one guy roughly translated it: "go with the flow".
23 carat on a silver background, distressed by abrasion prior to backing up with black.

I know this is not a beauty like many other signs here on the board but its my first finished glass sign.

The black logo is made with a mask and 1shot paint with no hardener, the aluminum leaf is applied with water size, and everything backed up with black acrylic paint and last one coat of yatch varnish. Its a sign for indoor use so I hope i made it correctly.

Hope you like it.

Nice, I like it.
I wonder what it would have looked like if you had distressed the piece with a bit of the "antiqued" look with tiny dashes of black on the aluminum leafed around the red border?

Hi there.. My second try for glass watergilding.

In the G and J there 18k lemon gold, the rest of the letters are gold immitationleaf and the snowflakes are silver immitation leaf.
All of it are watergilded. I hope the immitation leaf continue to stick to the glass.

I started out with a vinyl mask, painted it over with black 1shot and pell of the vinyl just right after. When it was dry I cleaned it up with normal window cleaner and the started watergilding. After drying I backed up the silverleaf with white and the gold with yellow ocre. I painted the whole backside with black and at last I gave it yacht varnish to protect it.

Please tell me if theres any bad ideas so I can correct next time.

By the way. It means Merry christmas, its danish and maybe its a little early for these ;)
