Since my come back from Praque I had some things that had to be done.
One of them is a white acid test.
After a few tests I made this 3 toned test piece.
Eventhough it is just a test piece I wanted to post the photo's just to have a chance to thank the following persons who helped me out with this technique:
1. Arthur Louis Duthie.
2. Dave Smith.
3. Pat Mackle.
4. Larry White.

Congratulations! You did good!
Now that you have gotten into toned glass you will find it is tricky to photograph accurately. You will find that the camera sees the toned light in a different manner
than your eyes and brain. Try photographing your glass from the inside of your building with the outside light in the background and it will read a lot better.

I'll agree with Pat. The toned etching is very interesting as to how the light hits it.
Here's a couple pictures of the same panel. In the morning, it shows a positive image, and in the evening, it goes negative, and sometimes during the day, it completely disappears!
It's really interesting how it changes, which adds a certian mystique to the "all seeing eye".

When "toning" the white acid panel, there's two different ways of going about it. You can mask the panel, then remove sections of the art and tone them. Or, the white acid panel can be painted with asphaltum, then toned, or in combination. Adding the toning mask by painting, can achieve details that you can't get with a vinyl mask, like crosshatching, spounge textures etc.
Oh, and did I mention....if you're going to solution gild over the toned etching, you'll need to do the toning reversed, as the dark tone will yield a light gild, and the light tone will yield a dark gild....it starts messing with your mind a bit, trying to figure the design out!
You keep on as you are....I like your enthusiasm!

Nice work Erik very well done. I like the illustration you used for testing out the tones, it works well for this type of work.
Would look good silvered also. keep it up...

Thank you guys.
Next step will be an extra large one.
Have to look around in the shop where a nice one would fit.
I do not know if I will go for the typical 1880-1920 flowers theme, maybe something else again.

Not being at all familiar with acid- do you soak the glass exposing sections at a time to the "darkest" is done first and is in longest?

The clear glass will be named black in the design.
The white etched part will be named 100% white.
This whitening is a layer of glass-crystals that lays on the glass.
Toning down will reduce (etch away) the white glass-crystals layer.
1st tone after 8 minutes for example will be 80% white.
2nd tone after 16 minutes for example will be 60% white.
etc. etc.
If you keep on toning it down, at the end the white glass-crystals will completely be reduced (etched away) and it will be transarant (black) again.
Not absolutely clear, because the etching made the surface of the glass smudged and a bit with a reliëf.
